What oil pick up for 283?

I am rebuilding a 283 and am going to use:
    (1) Chevrolet windage tray
    (2) Chevrolet trap door pan
    (3) Low pressure and low volume pump- Possibly the equivalent of a M-55

What is the part number currently available for a oil pick up that will fit properly. I would also take part numbers for a matched pump and pick up. Any recent experience?
    Thanks

John, I do not have a recent parts book. That said GM Parts Direct lists a pump for '61 283 as #1255584 for $83+. Sorry I don't have more info.---and uncertain if this is what you need. Joe probably knows.

No problem. I assume you're talking about a 1958-61 Corvette 283. In that case, you need a GM #3764113 oil screen and pick-up. Unfortunately, it's GM-discontinued without supercession. Federal-Mogul/Sealed Power to the rescue. They're part #224-1346 is identical to the GM #3764113. Actually, it's manufactured by Melling (as the GM piece probably was for the last 15 years, or so), but I don't think that Melling currently offers a directly equivalent part. Do not let anyone sell you a Melling S-1 or S-3 and tell you it's the same; they are NOT the same.

As far as an oil pump goes, your best bet these days is probably a Melling M-55 (NOT a Melling M-55HV). If the engine is a 1959-61, you could also use the GM #12555284. However, these days it could be that it's the same as the Melling M-55. The GM #12555284 currently GM lists for about 141 bucks. Since the price difference between it and the Melling pump is so great, it is possible that, even if Melling manufactures it, it's somehow different and better than the Melling-branded piece. You decide.

As far as a pump with a pre-installed oil pick-up and screen, I don't think you'll find one. Since the Corvette pick-up and screens of the C1 years are pretty much unique to Corvettes and would constitute a pretty low volume piece, I don't think you'll find one with a Corvette screen pre-installed.

By the way, this is what the pick-up I described in my previous post looks like. It's kind of hard, though, to see the subtleties in the curvature of the pipe and that's really where the differences lie in the Corvette pick-ups versus those used for other applications.

First, I realize that you know that the '58 did not use a trap door pan; second, I know that you have a 60-1 trap door pan out in the warehouse that you can use; the big drawback may be that the bolt/studs for the that trap door are probably no longer available - except somewhere in your warehouse. Good luck with the search!

If you are referring to the main cap studs which also retain the external baffle (windage tray), they were GM #3769769. However, they were discontinued without supercession more than 25 years ago.

the tube needs to be longer and bent different to clear the rear baffle of the trap door box in the pan
