Master Cylinder rebuild kit for "60

My master cylinder need to be replaced or rebuilt. I would prefer a rebuild. Assuming that rust has not rotted out the original one (requiring complete replacement) can anyone give me a lead for a cost effective (HAHA for C1 parts) rebuild kit?

Valeria, my guess is that your cylinder, assuming it is original, is rust pitted internally. To successfully rebuild the cylinder you will need to have it sleeved. I have used White Post Restorations, in VA, and Corvette Stainless Steel Brakes in FL to sleeve cylinders. Several people have had good success with Apple Hydraulics. Do a search here for phone numbers.

NAPA has a kit for about $17. In their United product line, ask for part number 3 (three). Contents of the kit look like this:

In addition to the NAPA kit that Jim mentions you can use a Dorman #TM3626 or a Raybestos #MK3. I expect that all 3 of these kits are exactly the same, so get the one that's easiest available.

However, as Dick mentions, your master cylinder will likely suffer from some bore corrosion damage. If so, even if it's slight, don't attempt to just hone the cylinder with a brake hone. I have found that without exception a honed master cylinder just will not perform properly. If there's any bore damage, have the master cylinder sleeved with either brass or stainless steel.

These cars have a single master cylinder. If it fails you have NO brakes.
Do not take a chance and try re-building a 50 year old cylinder without re-sleeving it. I prefer brass as brass will not gall like stainless does, but I'm sure either one will work fine. I'm sure any of the re-builders mentioned in this thread will do fine as well. I used White Post as they use brass and completely re-finish the cylinder casting to look like new. For about $200 they will do this and have it back to you in about a week. -Dan-

              Valeria,
Try White Post Restorations, Google them for info and talk to Billy or WR.
They charge about $200 for a resleve and rebuild with the outside nicely finished.
Turnaround is usually less then 2 weeks.
I removed my original master cylinder, sealed the line from the cylinder and when I got the master cylinder back, I bench bleed (bled ?) it and installed back in the car. It works perfectly and I did not have to bleed the whole system.

I pulled mine took it apart and to a local machine shop. They redrilled and put in a stainless steel sleeve for $65. I lightly honed, installed the rebuild kit, bench bled with DOT 5 since already in it for awhile. No problems and good brakes. Cleaned up the outer surface of the MC with a wire wheel and repainted.

Thanks for the information. I have a spot in the Lowes Motor Speedway Spring Auto show this coming weekend. I am told that my brakes will be OK for this event. I will work on the master cylinder after the show.
                  Thanks again the suggestions.

I have had master cylinders sleeved with brass here, but I see that you are somewhat far away, this place is more within Roy's neck of the woods! Do not rebuild your m/c without sleeving first, okay?
