    Air Filter Screen 427/435

    Good morning.

I am in need of an air cleaner screen (and filter) for a tri-power air cleaner. There is a screen on ebay this week # 120 549 783 468. I was hoping the experts might offer their opinions: NOS or repro.

    Thanks. Don.

Check out this link https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...74256&uid=1493 . It shows some pictures of an original.

The one on Ebay appears to have the correct holes. One thing that is different is the screen ends connect in the center of the flat area. It is in the corner on my original. I'm not sure if they all shpuld connect in the same area or not.

      John,

the seam could be anywhere. The real thing is the hole diamiter as you already stated.

The originals from the factory had 3 complete holes throughout, no partials like the ebay item. Please feel free to comment. The ebay may be NOS but not as the factory installed ones.

I'm no expert on tri-power air filter screens but I don't think it has to be 3 complete holes to be correct. In the earlier thread on the same subject that I linked to, multiple people stated that their originals had 1/2 or 1/3 of a hole at the top or bottom and the rest of the hole on the other side.

I agree with Rich that the seam could be anywhere.
I have three original air cleaner assemblies.
            One '67, one '68, and one '69.
That rough one in the middle is off my 46,000 mile 1967 400hp barn find.

I'll put up photos of the screens in my second post. Ridge

              screens

the one on the right is from the 1969 air cleaner. You can see that the metal around the holes is a little different than the other two ('67 and '68).
Since I got the '69 used, I am not 100% certain this screen is original, however the top definitely is. Comments welcome...

Any Judge out there that had input on the 68-69 Judging Manual regarding the 3 circles high description?

Agree -- chances of having 3 complete holes (as opposed to a TOTAL of 3 holes) is about 1 in 20 . No way the assemblers worried about such trivia. This is in the same category of urban legends as the vac hoses always having the colored band facing up. A total of 3 holes gives the same effective screen area, no matter where they are positioned. By specifying a total of 3 complete holes, the manuals are indirectly saying that if there's 3 holes, then the diameter of each hole is probably TFP.

Here's another characteristic of original A/C screens (from a late '69 L68 set-up). Note the crimps on one of the inside lips -- probably used to advance the components in the tooling. This one has the overlap in a corner.
