What is a reassigned VIN? I looked at a 66 BB NOM that had a reassigned VIN given to the car in 1978.

If the VIN was State issued (there are a number of valid reasons), the car's perfectly street legal and NCRS has no trouble judging these. I can't speak to the other circuits (NCCB/Bloomington or Chevy Vettefest) and their policy.
Reasons for a State issued VIN include:
(1) The factory original was lost or damaged.
(2) The car was a scrap yard recovery.
(3) The car was involved in some kind of prior ownership dispute (like theft recovery) and its legal VIN was questionable. -

This is what I found out about the car.
I bought the car from a Lee Thompson out in California, he purchased it from a dealer in 1978, the dealer told him that the car had been raced in Omaha, then ended up in CA, I checked with the old corvette guys around here, and they actually knew the car it was stock raced at the omaha raceway and actually was the 1967 class champion, thats what happened to the original motor, and thats why it got a 65 L78 replacement, the car was never cut up or anything like that just a factory stock class. But we think that it was probably stolen shortly after that and then recovered in Ca, I called the Ca DMV, and they told me that when cars were recovered they got reassigned vins, since most of the time the insurance had already paid out, and they did not want any vin discrepencies.Comment

Well Todd, it may have been. A reassigned VIN, means among other things that the original VIN is not available.
This could be due to many things, ex: stolen car and chop shop removed VIN tag, salvage car. new frame, etc. It means the state has issued the vehicle a VIN from the DMV.

The P-O-P will show it if it's still with the car.
If the transmission is original to the car, it will also be a clue - the L-36 came with an M-20, and the L-72 came with an M-21.
If the tachometer is original to the car, it will also be a clue - the L-36 had a 6000 redline, and the L-72 had a 6500 redline.Comment

Looking at the tach it redlines at 6500. I take it this would not be a good car for restoration and judging? Getting a correctly dated motor would be a bear, correct? Is $40k for this reasonable? It has a 65 corvette BB in it now and it is drivable.

Lee, I saw that car. Best to Check the VIN on the Frame. The Interior's a 65. Body etc. ALL point to a 1965 Vette Car. With the Vin in question. I fell away. AS DMV should ck. Vin on frame for out of state inspection. If comes up a 65 Vin. But issued 66 CA. Vin. Back in 78 The State may not have been a thorough. Where will it leave the Buyer? A 66 or 65 BB for $32K looked good. But hate to have impounded. Too many questions.Comment

Keep in mind, that when you eventually try to sell the car, you will have to overcome all the issues raised here to find a new owner for the car. That makes your chances of recouping any monies spent on the car more difficult. Why bother?Bill Clupper #618Comment

Thanks all, I looked at a 63 conv. back in MD, but looking at the gauges they were all 64. The VIN had been pop riveted on and the title looked funky. walked away from that one.
The car does look very nice, but not worth the hassle.Comment

A similar situation... My brother in-law bought a '66, turned out to be a '64, back in the '80's (he didn't know any better).
The DMV let him know about the problem, the car was impounded
and leter returned with a new vin #. Here in 2010 he drives and loves it but knows it will never be valuable or a #'s matching car.
His thought, and rightly so, is to go down the resto-mod road. These are the cars a that are appropriate for that. He's not unhappy, 5K investment and all these years of driving fun, what more could you ask!

I tracked down one of the prior owners of my 63 convt - he owned it in the early 70's. He said he thought the vin tag under the dash was suspicious because it had been spot welded rather than pop-rivited "like its supposed to be".
So he sold the car for that reason, never realizing the spot welded vin tag on a '63 was correct.
