    087 Delco Coil Info.

Do the real 1115087 coils have the little square shoulders next to the hi-voltage nipple as the Corvette Central Repops have?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Ken, Original 087's have a small shoulder. They also have a small hole in the terminal end area for the tang of the retainer.
    Why buy a repro Ken???
087's are typically on ebay a lot. You should be able to get nice NOS one for about 125 or so.
087's are not rare. It's the 091's that are tough to find.

Depends on when the '087 or '091 coil in question was originally manufactured. The Driveline article by Kent Kaiser recited the running changes that Delco made to these coils. So, that info should set your timeline as to what era a given coil came from...

Do the originals have a tanged retainer to fit into the hole, or is it flat?
        Thanks.

Sigh...these details depend on the year of construction. The running changes documented in the Restorer Magazine article I mentioned detail all of this minutia. So, again, the issue of 'original' pertains to what year we're talking about.

Big Picture: there's a before 1962 version and an after 1962 version (plus there are several variations after that)...

Do you have to have all the old Driveline magazines, or is there an easy way to search for the article by Kent Kaiser on the coils?

One does not have to have the old copies of [i]The Restorer[i] to get access to old stories. One need only order The Restorer on CD from the membership office. One has the choice of the articles sorted by your year(s) of interest or the complete collection. I am not sure where stories like this, which have application to several year(s), are in the universe of CDs, so one should ask Eric in the Membership Office when placing your order.

The most convenient way to find/read the articles (there was actually and a follow-up) is to have The Complete Restorer CD. Then, it's simply a matter of searching on the coil PN, 1115087, or the author.

BTW, I went from memory and mis-quoted! The author was Kenneth Kayser not Kent Kaiser.

But, you'll find all the juicy little details about the exact height of the coil's center tower, tanged vs. non-tanged mounting washers, high vs. low placement of the coil's embossed ID marks and reinforced vs. non-reinforced 'nubs' on the center tower adjacent to the primary mounting pads...

Hey Jack. What's the sighhh. Very funny.

Ken, There are countless posts on the DB about the coil. A ton of them in fact. Coils are a science into themselves. Not all agree with all the hype you read about them.
Like I said your coil is a piece of cake to find. All over the auction sites.
Lots of 63 guys may have them on the shelve too as they have to remove them and put on the proper 091's to satisfy the judging requirements of the 5th edition. So maybe some of the sandbaggers will cut loose with them. JD
