? to buy or not to buy 1965 396/425

    confirmed 31,000 mile 1965 396/425
was a basket case when restored
to me the low miles mean nothing if it was a basket case
    150 from last vin #
    claimed to be original motor
pad looks ok to me but restorer does not remember restamping it and is firm on the original motor was blown apart (& second motor also)
incorrect differential (not posi) carb, radiator, transmission alternator
    clock new mechanism (new type)
    restored 1989
appears mostly with non NOS parts
    no hit body
some of factory paint dabs but not the stencils or tags
    very nice paint
    original BB car
    not orignal exterior paint
    priced at $75,000
    estmated 1-2000 miles since restoration
    300 miles last 10 years
    pictures of restoration
orignal owner letter - still breathing
    3-4 owners since new
    hard top in original color
consigned - owner is at $70,000
red inside and out with white top
20 year old yellow lines- radial
side pipes appear to be factor
i assume top is as good as the rest of the car
    i assue drives out ok
    disk brakes
no power stering - a plus for me
see car benchmarkclassics.com to look at car
should i but the car or not
God, i love those old cars!!!!!!!!!!!

For that price you can get a clean 66 427.

Nice car -- it's also on eBay. Don't be too picky ; there were 5 times as many BB's produced in 1966 and 1967.

-- from the owner of a L78 164 VIN #s after that one.

It sure is a pretty car but lots of stuff missing. The correct carb is very expensive and tough to find. Does it have the correct 352 starter? If not thats is also next to impossible to find and super expensive. How about shocks, fan, and fan clutch, and the list keeps going. You will be spending tens of thousands on parts alone but before that you must verify the motor, and trim tag, to make sure it's real then change the color back. If you can does this yourself or are just using it for a drive thats fine but if you want a show car you would be better off paying more for a turnkey car. Good luck.

For me the pics took a l o n g time to open. Would have liked to see VIN & Trim tags, and under-body pics. Be careful, go and see. Bill.

Ewing, there was a nice original owner 65 396 coupe in Oklahoma City about a month ago. Restored by the original owner. Few things wrong like chrome fan, etc. Engine and pad was the real deal. e-mail me if you want info. Gary....

After looking at the stamp picture, I always wonder why the numbers on the stamp pad rust or age and the rest of the pad stays clean. As Steve stated, finding and purchasing the rare parts for a 396 will be difficult and expensive.

That car 194675S123400 was listed in Driveline #75, p22. I'll try to look it up today or tomorrow.

Driveline ad says 396, red/red, goldlines, side exh., title history, frame-off restoration by "Mineral Point Auto Body", exceptional car, expensive, area code 608.

I'm with Wayne on that one. A REAL '65 L78 car is a rare and desireable car.

                      Good luck.
