To make base coat / clear coat LOOK like acrylic lacquer folks:

Add color to the clear coats, (reduces the "plastic" depth of the paint)

Flatten shine in the door jamb areas (unbuffed areas), (hair spray)

Don't do a good job color sanding, (leave some orange peel)

Don't buff it out to perfection.

In other words, do a paint job somewhere between half/assed, pizz/poor and a Maaco $199 special.

If you get a decent judge hair spry won't fly.

Unfortunately, that's true. Not the decent part but the part that is still SUBJECTIVE. Another member lost a point because the judge "thought" his radiator support bolts were wrong. They were CORRECT but he still lost a point. Total B.S. if you ask me.

Tom, can you tell nitrocellulose from acrylic?

                Thanks!

                  Re: Paint

The nitrocellulose did not have plasticizers (acrylics) in it therefore had lower gloss levels. I doubt anyone today could tell the difference. Even todays air dry laquers have a different appearance than a factory baked finished but I doubt anyone would deduct for it if they could tell the difference to start with. All you need is original appearance the paint chemistry is irrellevant. The appearance can be acheived with most paints available today.

Thanks Tom! I have to stop in your shop the next time I am in Longview. You are just north of the new Target, correct?

                    Thanks!
