Here's an example of what was available, under this part #, over-the-counter from 1965 thru at least to 1992 (the last time I priced them at $155 -- was too rich for me
).
I picked this one up yesterday, and now completes my two sets of 5 for both my '65s
. This is the only one that (because of the stampings -- see below) is not TFP. But what the heck, as John H. has pointed out, unless you have clear plastic wheelcovers, or use it as your spare, who's to know ?
. The shop still has another 3, but not quite as nice as this one (no extra charge for the dust)
.
I'll point out a few features, make my guesses, and wait any comments. Note the long valve stem; DILL TR-418, so you can R&R the valve cap (not the "shortie" described in the '65 TIM&JG). The two nubs are present, to prevent the wheelcover from rotating. These are welded design (rim to hub); not riveted.
Now for the stampings -- inside air chamber: 15 x 5_1/2 JK, with a 7 and 23 in the vicinity. Below that K184 and '08' (or 80 ?).
On the rim: [to left of valve stem] K184 (space) 7; [to right of valve stem] 23. On one of the raised bumps between bolt holes of the hub/spider: K1 (over) 84; on another: the letter 'G' (looks like a '6' but I checked with magnifying glass) Maybe it was supposed to be GM, like TFP.
A third raised bump has '14' stamped.
OK, here's my interpretation; comments welcome. K184 is Kelsey Hayes, manufactured at Romulus Michigan in the 4th month of 1984. The 7 and 23 is July 23rd of that year. Have no idea what the '80' (or 08) means. On the hub the K1(over)84 is the same as above (manufacturer/plant and year). So we're left with the 'G' and the '14. I'll guess that G is the 7th month (July) and that the 14th is the day of the month [9 days ahead of the date on the rim].
