Pitting on Dbl Hump of Cylinder Head - Can I Grind it Off?

Getting ready to exchange some cylinder heads on my 67 convertible. Matching March 3rd, 1967 dates but one has a bit more wear on the double humps (lots of pitting). Can I grind this off to smooth easily, or would that deface the head and cause judging problems? Is that even necessary? Thanks.

      Mike,

It is pitting (holes in the face) not the sand casting effect that is seen on the side of head. Cast March 3rd, 1967. The head was bit rough when I got it and before we reconditioned it.

If it's simple pit, why not fill with JB Weld, wipe smooth to preserve what remains of the factory original milling marks and just shoot your Chevy Orange on? That's one approach used to correct used heads that've gone through a prior machine shop and were 'wacked' with the machinest's identifying stamp...

          Jack,

Thanks, that seems easy enough. Are the machinist identifying stamps the numbers stamped into the double humps. One of my heads has a "4" stamped there.

            Kirk,

I believe Jack is referring to a machinist at an engine shop or a head rebuilding service. Those places might stamp some sort of identifying mark(s) on the head so they could identify their work for warrantee purposes.

Various parts of the engine were marked at the engine plant to identify the assembly line, or sometimes the individual worker who preformed the task. Most commonly we see a symbol on one end or the other of the heads (I suspect that is what you are seeing), and on the intake. The mark on the intake is the person who made the balance and final timing setting at the hot test stand -- in those years when a hot test was done.
