    Clutch Rod Bushing

    Hi all,

When I got my car, the rubber bushing for the clutch rod was just a pile of shredded rubber. Now that my car has been restored and driven, the rubber bushing for the clutch rod is just a pile of shredded rubber.

Does anyone know of a source for a bushing that will last, maybe a urethane one?

    Thanks,

    Bob

Could you be referring to the boot that slides over the clutch rod and attaches at the firewall?

        Bob -

That would be a good application for a urethane bushing, but I'm not aware of anyone who makes one. Those bushings on my 57's lasted longer after I switched them from the original Borg & Beck 3-finger coil spring pressure plates to modern LuK diaphragm pressure plates.

          Hi all,

John's reply indicated that he knew what bushing I meant, but I'm attaching a pic since that's worth a thousand words. John didn't know of a urethane one, but if anyone spots one, let me know. I have the modern clutch, but the bushing still tore up.

          Thanks,

          Bob

This is a common problem. My local hardware store had a good selection of bronze bushings. I adapted one that completely replaces the old original. It works fine.

Jim, do you remember the size of that bronze bushing?

Unfortunately, no; this was two or three years ago.

As I recall, I left the outer shell of the rubber bushing assembly in place in the arm of the Z-bar and looked for a bushing with a OD that would fit within the shell. I don't remember having to drill the bushing to clear the shank of the special bolt. I might have had to trim the length of the bushing, but that's about all.

The bushing doesn't have to be a perfect fit to work well. It can be slightly loose inside the old bushing shell. It can be slightly loose on the special bolt.

Best thing is to measure the ID of the shell, the OD of the bolt, and head for your local hardware store.

I've found the the repros break down much quicker than the GM originals did--you can find NOS from time to time on ebay, etc.
