    Voltage Regulator differences

I just bought an NOS 515 VR for my '67. The one I took off had no markings. The NOS one has two long threaded stems, like bolts, on the back side of it. The one I took off has nothing at all on the back side. I have mounted the NOS one and all things work fine, but I am curious about the big differences here. Any thoughts on the design diffrences? Can these replacement VRs work without those threaded thingies?

Mike, sounds like the one you took off was a solid state VR.Bill.

Sure, here they are. The box it came in was easy. It is mounted so hard to get a good pic of the mounting flange on the right side that has the markings. In case you can't read them, the right side of the mounting bolt has the part number:
        1119
        515

and the left side of the mounting bolt has the markings:
        12V
        7A

The 7A is the date code that fits for my mid-Feb., 1967 build date. Took a while to find one like that.

Oh sure, right, thanks. I forget new things have the designs all "modernized". That also would explain why the NOS one weighs about twice as much too.

Are these the two "threaded thingies" that you refer to. Pic is of a "515" dated 7F. They are resistors, and are on the bottom (outside the cover) because they generate heat.

Yes, that's them. Thanks for the info, I am always curious about the old ways these things did their jobs. Very interesting how these seemingly mundane parts worked and how rare some of them are these days.
