    Ash tray won't come out

I couldn't get the ash tray to slide down in after I installed my center console on my 67. So, because I was short on time, I installed the ash tray, and THEN screwed the center console down. Obviously, the judges didn't like that they couldn't get it out.

I'm headed for PV this September in Ohio, and this will fail me.

If I remember right, there are a few clips that the screws go into for the center console. Those clips are bonded somehow to the transmission tunnel fiberglass and as such, aren't easy to move or adjust.

How can I fix the alignment on my center console?

    Hey Chris,

I have the same issue on my '66 and hope someone has an easy fix for the problem.

Rob, when did you Top Flight at Regionals? What was your deduction for the ash tray?

On some of the repo ash tray doors, they are made just a little to long. So you have to remove the center console then remove the ash tray door. You then can then file down the end of the door. The door edge should be only about 1/16 of an inch away from the edge of knob. Hope this make sense

I'm assuming that I can file down the ash tray instead of filing down the door, eh?

My door is original but the ash tray is a repop.

I would say that your right, you will have file down the repo ash or restore your original ash tray.

Can't you adjust the "plate - trans control lever seal retainer" AIM UPC 1, sheet B3 ? (or, as I call it, the rubber shift boot retention bracket) towards the rear a bit ? Like maybe 1/16" before all screws are tightened. this bracket governs the location of the ashtray, relative to the console.

                Chris,

It was last May at the Tahoe Regional. I think I lost 1 point for the tray not coming out. I know it's original because before I had the carpet replaced it would come out fine. I hope Wayne's suggestion works.

Rob -- got thinking further. Might be even easier to just back off the 8 screws holding the console to the trans / driveshaft tunnel, and have someone push forward (maybe gain another 1/16") while you re-tighten. This might be all you need, without removing the console to loosen the boot retention plate/brkt. I realize that two of the eight console screws attach to this bracket, but still, some slack is present.

Make sure when you install the ashtray that the snubber is in the rear. Have seen may incorrectly installed and difficult to get out.

Re: Ash tray won't come out

Well, I tried playing with this last night. The bracket that holds the ash tray is too far to the passenger's side and too far forward by probably 1/4". I can't get enough play in the screw holes that hold the bracket and shifter boot to the trans tunnel to get the ash tray to work right.

I'm bringing my original ash tray up to see if that makes any difference. The issue is that the horizontal lip on the ash tray is catching on the center console trim. The lip looks very similar on my original as the repop does.

Re: Ash tray won't come out

Well, I compared my original ash tray (rusty and dented) to the repop one I bought from Paragon.

The Paragon ash tray is wider than the opening will allow for. So, I catches on the center console when I put it in.

So, now I'm going about cleaning up my original.
