I have a 1958 f.i. car.i am trying to finish the engine bay area before the body drop. The car is a f.i. car for sure but the car was in pieces when i bought it. The engine with the car is a 250 hp. hydralic cam, with a tach driven generator. the car is a early serial number 33xx. The engine numbers and casting dates are correct . My question is i dont have a hole in the fire wall above the heater area to run the windshield washer hoses through, the only hole is on the far right where i have the tach cable. Was there a early 1958 routing for the windshield washer hoses or this car a 290 hp. car because i do have a hole in the firewall behind the distributor that is 1.25in. that is round, it is not a 2.75 oval hole the assembly manual shows. Thank you for the help.

Re: New Member with 1958 Question
Windshield washers were optional in '58, are you sure the car came with them?Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: New Member with 1958 Question
I think the car came with washers, all of the windshield washer bottle and vacuum can brackets and right fender screw holes look original. The bottle bracket is a fi. design not carb design. Also the washer nozzles were in the body when i removed them and the original paint and primer were under them.- Top

Re: New Member with 1958 Question
The 250 hp car used a block-off plate on the driver's side radiator core filler to cover the hole otherwise left open to duct the outside air to the FI aircleaner assy. If your car is missing the cover and there is NO sign of a screw ever having been driven into the screw holes around the outside of the flange, and you can see evidence of the supports for the hose on the inner fender panel, then you might think about 290 hp, but the tach is also unique to the 290 hp as it is driven at a different speed than the generator driven tach. Are you sure the holes for the hoses haven't just been filled?Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: New Member with 1958 Question
Rick, is the hole on the verticle (i.e. were the 2.75 oval would be) or further up by the wiper motor? I'm pretty sure I know the hole you're looking at and it seems like it is the one were 3 or 4 different items run through it. I'll take a look at my '58 tonight. Ted- Top

Re: New Member with 1958 Question
Ted, Thanks for the reply, the hole is the one on the verticle below the wiper motor. I talked to a local guy the other day with a 290hp. car and the hole we are talking about is 1.25 in. like mine not the 2.75in. that is in the books. His car is a early s/n also.- Top

Re: New Member with 1958 Question
A timely post!
Consider reading the Ralph Ridge article in the current edition of NCRS Restorer Magazine. Ralph's a fellow Rocky Mtn Chapter member and a founding member of the NCRS New Zealand chapter.
The article deals with Ralph traveling to New Zealand and helping a 'down under' NCRS member with the restoration of his '58, base, 230 HP car. It's loaded with minor technical observations that lead to the realization that the car was actually a 250 HP FI that had been 'converted' to base 230 HP configuration in its earlier ownership cycle + the differences between the the 250 FI and the 290 FI cars for '58...- Top
