Why not have the original speaker that you already have re-conned?

Mike, only thing that I have is a Sam's Photofact for 56-7 Wonderbar, part # 3725156. Parts list shows an 8 inch speaker, part # 7268177 at 3 to 4 ohms impedance. Nothing in the Chevrolet radio parts books about impedance. Gary....

Jackson's speaker service in Michigan is another source for reconing.

              Re: radio speaker

There are MANY sources for speaker re-cone work, Mike. And, they're ALL OVER the map in terms of location as well as price.

I use a local shop here in Denver who's been in the business for 25+ years. But, that's me...

You'll find costs can range from $20 to $150 depending on who does the work, his background, his parts inventory, Etc.

My suggestion is to fire up your Google search engine and search on speaker + re-cone to see who's near you. Also, if there's an electronics shop locally that caters to good ole boy radio/TV technicians (selling vacuum tubes is a dead give away), they'll know who's in the speaker re-cone biz in your neck of the woods too.

Another source for local leads is a competent musical instrument retailer. Many of the old classic guitar amplifiers have unique speakers that simply aren't available anymore in replacement form. So, those who seek to maintain classic electronic musical equipment are FORCED to re-cone their existing speaker frames...

It's NOT rocket science! The old cone is ripped out/removed along with the voice coil (solenoid that surrounds the permanent magnet). A fresh voice coil is installed and a fresh speaker cone is trimmed and glued onto the speaker frame. Bingo, she's done and ready for another 30-years of use...

Interesting observation, Gary! I have the United Motors version of the Delco radio service bulletin specifically for the '55 Corvette Wonderbar (Model 3711897). While it gives full schematics and a parts list, it does NOT define the impedance of the speaker either!

It calls out an 8" PM, round, speaker with TWO different PN's. The service PN is 6105 and the factory original PN is listed as 7264182...

                    Mike

I just received my speaker from Greg Thompson for my 67. Got it to Orlando from Minnesota in two days. They are supposed to have the best matched replacement speakers. They would not pass NCRS but it will sound good!! Re-coning certainly is the way to go if you care about originality.

My mismatched repro speaker from a major source seems to have damaged my radio.

Like Jack said, the GM 55 parts book says the speaker is 7264182 but it also says "(6 X 9 eliptical P.M.)". I have read that some of the speakers in 53-55 were not round but I've never seen one that wasn't.

The correct impedance for these old radios is 4 ohms. But get yours re-coned. If you want you can have it re-plated first. Believe it is electro-tin. -Dan-

                            Mike,
I've used Jackson Speaker Service a few times and have been very pleased with the results. Much better then replacement speakers. The tone and volume are much better. Rich
