    Key Knock-outs and judging

I searched the archives and did not see the specific answer to my question, which is: Should the knock-outs for the ignition/door key and the glovebox/spare tire lock be knocked out or left in for judging on a '67? And if they should be knocked out, how the devil do you do that since the seem pretty secure with just a small line around the knock-out portion. Thanks for any help.

    Re: Key Knock-outs and judging

Since we allow (encourage actually) cars to be used/driven, we don't care if the knock-outs are in or out of the key so long as they're present to inspect/judge. The standard is to present the car as it was built and delivered to the initial owner.

That includes then current dealer prep. It was pretty routine for dealers to REMOVE the knockouts on keys (especially the primary set) to thwart the potential for theft. That's especially true when dealers gave away a key fob with a new car delivery.

How do you remove? Simple. Place the head of the key over a hollow cylindrical support (e.g. appropriate sized socket). Take a hammer an punch and 'tap' the knockout. It'll pop right out...

Mike, for judging, either way is OK as long as you have the knockouts on the ring. Me, I leave them in. To remove, place the key flat on something with a opening about 1/2", maybe a socket, open vise, etc.. Place screwdriver over knockout and hit hard with a hammer. Be surprised how easy they come out. Salesmen used to do it right on their desk. Bill.

Jack has provided you the correct answer to the first part of your question, but I thought you and others might like to know that there is a Kent Moore tool to remove the key knock out. I don't off hand have the number handy, but I could get it for you if you wanted to watch eBay for it. The tool essentially does what Jack instructed you to do, but in a more controlled fashion so the knock outs don't go flying all over the place.

Hey, we've all discovered someone else was typing essentially the same reply as we were! Normally, I LOSE these typing contests because I'm long winded in my replies...

OK, thanks very much for all the info and tips. I'll make sure to not damage the numbers on the knock-outs too. It seems they match the numbers on my Delivery Report and that would be important to not mess up I guess.
