    Re: Quadrajet Question, Fuel smell

It could be a leaky fuel bowl. As in nearly all carburetors, the Quadrajet's bowl had pressed-in plugs used to seal holes left after drilling fuel passages during the manufacturing of the carburetor. These plugs in the Q-jet sometimes leaked fuel causing; (a) a cold engine being hard to start, (b) erratic idling, (c) poor fuel mileage, and (d) excessive emissions. Many Quadrajets have their fuel bowl plugs sealed with epoxy when rebuilt to prevent leaks. Attached is a picture of the plugs that typically leak on Q-Jets.

And (e) the second-largest recall in GM history for engine fires.

My brother-in-laws 66 Bonneville engine caught on fire on a trip, and burned. He loved that car. This happened after I changed out the Q-Jets on my 68 and 70 Corvettes in 1974 to Holley 650 6210 650cfm spreadbores.
