    New entrant for flight judging

I am about to show a '66 BB 427 coupe that just completed a nuts and bolts restoration and having never been through this process before would welcome some guidance about how many points can be lost for various non-conformances such as wrong tire valve stems, wrong battery cables, and restored beyond standard paint (right color, too smooth).
I'd welcome any guidance a veteran would be kind enough to provide.

I would suggest that you make sure all your Operational items work. They are 20 point each defect.

Steve, pick up some 'extra' points. NCRS decal on window, do not cover date codes. Fire ext., within easy reach. Battery cut off. Clean glove box, no maps, tissues, flashlite,, etc. License plate bracket on front. Gear shift linkage in long throw position. Drive to event if you can. Good luck, pay attention and enjoy. Bill.

Why drive - are there extra points? I didn't see anything about that in the flight judging manuals I ordered through NCRS. The show is 350 miles away and I am fearful I will lose all the chalk marks we labored so hard to make on the undercarriage. And the side pipies are pretty loud to boot. I confess I'm spoiled by a C6 daily driver. It just isn't as unique as the '66.

Steve, that was the point of my post: extra points. Yes, you do for driving, BUT, that's a L O N G way & I know what you mean about side pipes, I couldn't do it. Hell, 50 miles and I want OUT and home. Bill.

            Stephen,
Follow Scotts's instructions, make certain all Ops items are working correctly. You didn't say how soon the event happens. If you have the time, put some long haul miles on the car so that you are comfortable with it. Have a AAA Premium road service policy just in case. You don't want to head out on a 350 mile trip with an unknown car.

If the weather is good you can drive it thousands of miles and not worry about chalk marks. 350 miles is a piece of cake. Go for it and earn the mileage points for driving the car to the event.

You like side pipes, you gotta put up with the noise.
            Cheers,

Yes I agree, drive it if you can. I have my car in the upcoming Gettysburg Regional in May and I'll have about a 35 mile drive. Wish it was about 120 miles, like the meet I went to last October. I got a little over one BIG point for driving and that is a big help towards your final score. That can mean the difference between a 2nd Flight and a Top Flight. PT

Patrick, nothing says you have to drive the most route direct to Gettysburg. If you want to go 50, 100 or 200 miles, I am sure you can find a beautiful route that will eventually get you to the meet. Hey, make a detour through the Poconos. I enjoyed that part of PA on the drive from the Marlborough National back to Houston if you don't take into account the heavy rain and severe lightining storm we experienced North of Philly. Does a cow and a flat rock make any sense to you?
                Cheers,

Charlie, the thing is that all the judging sheets have my address on them, which is local. I think that would raise a few eyebrows and I don't want any funny looks from the Judges. With all the money I have tied up in this Regional, I don't want anything to blow up. PT

Patrick the question about whether you trailered or drove, and how far, is on the "Green Sheet." That is the form with the insurance information and your address and membership number. The guys who judge your car will likely never see that administrative sheet -- only the tabulators and Judging Chairman. And besides the question is: "How far did you trailer or drive your car?" People often drive to National Conventions by a less than direct route -- going with one of the Road Tours for example -- and it is all fine.

To use the driving points the car must score more than 75% before the driving points kick in, and the driving points can not exceed 10% of the score.

                      Pat ,

It's normal for people to drive a circuitous route to get to a meet either to pack on the points or to just enjoy driving the car. Sometimes both.

                        Guys,
I am certainly not suggesting circumventing any rule. In the case of driving points, the rules is as Terry stated. I like driving the '64 and if I drive it to lunch that may be a couple of miles from home, I'll probably do a 100 there and back. Same as when driving it to a meet.

As Terry also said, members do not always take the most direct route to a meet. I drove from Houston to Denver to join the Rocky Mountain Road Tour to Boston because their scheduled stops along the route were of interest to me.
                        Best regards,

Terry, I'm looking at the yellow judging sheets from last October's judging meet I went to that the judges use. There is a sticker on each one with my name, address, VIN #, color of the car, etc. Since it doesn't seem to be against the rules, maybe I'll take the "scenic route" to Gettysburg!

                            Stephen,

If you know your paint is too good, here is what to expect from the exterior judges. They will ask you to open your hood and doors to look at the rain gutters and door jambs. When/If they do that, you have lost all or most of your paint points. What they hope to see by taking a look at the jambs and inside the hood is dull paint surfaces. If they do and it is factory typical, you should receive about 50% of the points that were lost, added back to your score. Be sure to prep the door jambs and the rain gutters correctly which you should be able to find in the archive of this TDB.

Good Luck and please let us know how the judging turned out.
