    69 Radio wiring

    Hi,

I've got my dashboard apart and putting in the correct radio (mono)to replace the bubba boom box assembly. I have a couple of questions to correct bubba's wiring.
    1. On the power supply to the radio; I can see the blue and green wires that go from the harness to the radio. For the black wire, the is black ground wire hanging from the one of the metal braces. Is this the correct black wire or something different?
    2. For the 2 kick panel speakers, there are t shaped pig tail connectors with a black and green wires. The only open connection on the mono radio is on the side with a flat connector with 3 connection points. The middle appears to be a ground and I cannot see colors on the from and rear wires going into the radio.
    3. The radio has a white wire comong out of one hole on the top of the radio and back into another and is taped down with black tape. Is this anything I need to address.
    4. An additonal question: On the nuts that hold the volume and tuning shafts to the bezel; is there one nut on each side or one nut that holds the shaft to the radio body followed by a 2 nd that holds the holds the shaft to the bezel?

The radio was purchased from corvette specialties and was rebuilt and tested.

    Thanks,

    Don

Check out your copy of the AIM (Assy Instruction Manual), in the rear where options are called out. The base AM/FM radio is UPC U-69.

You should discover there's a single harness from the dash harness assy that provides three wires to power the basic radio chassis. One wire is power, the other ground and the third provides HL switch varied voltage to the radio's illumination lamp to keep it in lock-step with other illuminated console gauges. This is NOT where speakers hook up!

The AIM should show you other radio harness items that connect the radio to its external convector (a heat sink with a DS-501 transistor that serves as the final audio drive amplifier) that's located well away from the radio in the center cluster. The convector is what drives the speakers.

Without BOTH the radio chassis and the convector, you only have HALF of the radio and you will not get sound out of the speakers!

As jack said the convector is needed and it connects to the radio with a rectangular plug. My convector was connected to the frame under the dash behind the glove box pouches on the passenger side. The convector is about 2 inches wide and four inches long with aluminum fins surrounding a round transistor. I hope Bulba didn't throw it out or cut the wires to it.

          Hi Don,
If you continue to wonder about things with your radio think about calling Jerry Rudbeck.
He repairs these radios and even though he didn't work on yours I bet he'd answer some questions. He's a member and a very helpful fellow.
He has an ad in the DRIVELINE. 864-363-0947
          Regards,
          Alan

            Re: 69 Radio wiring

            Hi,

I've got things figured out except the speaker wiring. The power supply attaches to the side with 3 prong plug. The prior owner had cut the yellow power wire. The finned transitor attaches to the back with a yellow blue green pig tail.

The open connector is for the speakers with a 3-contact T-shaped pigtail with green, black and blue. I have speaker wires coming from both kick panels with black and green wires, no blue wire. There are no open blue wires that I can find. The wiring diagram only shows the power connect to the radio and not any of the speakers. I called the shop where I bought the radio but there radio guy has been out sick for several days. I'll re-check the AIM and see if I can find any info.

If you know how to wire the speakers with black and green wires into a black green and blue pigtail; please let me know.

            Thank you for your assistance,

            Don

Sir: Do yourself a favor. Take Alan's advice and call Jerry. He is, without a doubt, "MR CORVETTE RADIO MAN".
