Although anything is possible (assembler and inspector both missing a wrong spare tire), the cars were built with five matching tires and wheels.

It would be more likely that the first owner wanted a different style of tire than St. Louis installed, and the dealer accommodated the owner's desires but forgot or blew off the spare.

          Tom
While working at a Chevy dealership in the 60's, I inspected the cars as they came off the car hauler. There were far stranger things then a non matching spare tire. Impala SS with two different style hub caps, a 66 Caprice with a 325hp motor on the order and window sticker but a 360hp under the hood. I could go on and on but I'm sure you get the picture.

In the late '70s a friend bought a Suburban that was delivered with tinted glass on one side and standard glass on the other -- doors and side windows. The dealer "fixed" it.

In the early 70's I saw a 60 Vette, original owner, that came with turquoise carpet on one side and blue on the other.

Must have been color blind carpet installers -- before they moved to the paint line.

We had a GMC van in the fleet at work, complete with a Chevrolet badged rear door!

Re: Road Tires & Spare Tire

Ive had my years at GM dealerships, and a line mechanic, tires and wheels were routinely switched at the dealerships, because some owners did not like a specific type of tire and the was another car with that had what he liked, so if the wheels were alike they swaped tires and wheels,so know you guys with dated tires and wheels that just don't seem to match the production date of your car maybe this is why.there were also many other items radios were common, wheel swaps, tiresand wheels were also a high theft item.

Tom, I cannot say how ever I have seen the spare and road tires of different makes.I am sure as John H. says its possiable. as I to have seen many oddities before when repairing and preping new cars at gm dealerships.
