    NCRS Books

Can anyone tell me the difference between the "Shop Manual" and the "Service Manual" (for a 1964) that are sold at the NCRS store? From the description on the store's websiite they seem to contain the same information.
    Thanks-Doug

    Doug,
I just looked at the store site and the shop manual was listed as 66-82 and the service manuals they still offer are 66 and 67. There may be others available, but I didn't see them. The shop manual appears to be a compilation of excerpts from factory service and overhaul manuals. The service manual appears to be a "factory" manual that was part of a group of manuals printed by Helm that the dealers used. The dealers usually got a set consisting of several manuals for the different models. My 71 got a chassis service manual which covered most engine, chassis, and body repairs and then you had a overhaul manual which covered in depth engine, transmission, and drive axle repairs. Different years required different manuals. The passenger car lines were somtimes mixed in. Corvette body was included in the chassis service manual at that time, but passenger body was in a seperate Fisher Body manual. I didn't check with Helm, but I would imagine it is out of print if the NCRS store doesn't have it. I am sure some are floating around at swap meets or on Ebay. Chip.

As far as factory service manuals (manuals issued by GM for the dealers) for the early Corvettes go, prior to 1963 there was what was called the "ST-12", "Corvette Servicing Guide" that covered all of the all years prior to 63. In 1963 they came out with a service manual "ST-21" titled "1963 Corvette Shop Manual". Then, in 1964 they issued the "1964 Corvette Shop Manual-Supplement" which was "ST-34. This manual covered any changes , additions or new information for 64 that was not in the 63 manual, and was to be used with the 63 manual for all necessary service information. Again in 65 they issued a supplement, "ST-60" titled "1965 Corvette Shop Manual Supplement", which like the 64 supplement covered any new or different service information through the 65 model year, and used in concert with the 63 and 64 manual and supplement. For 1966 and later years, they came out with a new service manual for each individual year (like the chassis service guide mentioned by Paul). All of these manuals are readily available in reproduction and originals are fairly easy to come by also.

....and if you have a later '64 with 380 fuel injection then you'll want all three (63,64,65).

Doug, The 63 shop FI section leaves a lot to be desired as it was written using a prototype FI with a wobble pump. Your library should also have the Corvette Servicing Guide ST12 manual. The FI sections is great for 58 to 65. For the midyears the ST 12 manual is wonderful for the theory, for the trouble shooting, the fuel meter, and best of all for the hi-pressure gear pump. Not too much good on the air cleaner side though.
Don't waste your money on individual FI manuals. The shop manuals are a better value and contain more info.

You also need a 1/4 page of info in the 65 supplement for your starting system on your 64-7380 FI unit. That's if you have that unit. If you have an early 64 with left over 63 unit then you don't need the 65 supplement. JD
