67 Exhaust Manifold French Locks

Should these be steel or stainless steel? Which is NCRS correct? Thanks.

steel. judges check for stainless, the repos of which don't hold a magnet. believe chevy still services the steel critters. mike

Yes, the originals were definitely mild steel for both big blocks and small blocks. Of course, you'll never find one of these on my car; it's stainless steel only for me since I HATE rust.

The small block locks are still available from GM, but not under the original part number. The original part number for 1966-82 small blocks was GM #3880844. That part was replaced quite a few years ago by GM #14081241 which remains available (for almost 8 bucks, each, GM list). I do not know how the 14081241 differ from the 3880844.

The big block locks were discontinued by GM over 25 years ago. They're still available in reproduction, though, in both mild steel, as original, or stainless steel, for guys like me.
