66 gas lid help

Had a friend take his 66 Corvette to be services (oil change) and some jerk tried to open the gas lid cover . Not asking or knowing anything he grabbed it with two hands thinking it twisted open and tore the lid right off. The 66 is a original survivor and all parts original and my friend wont's a real nice lid to put back on and not a repro. Question how correct and good is a repro if he cant locate a nice original.

There are some fine details in the casting numbers and you have to know which flag the car took. These are out there on the flee. Last week there were some OK used parts that would be good for this. A NOS part $$$.

One thing he's got going for him is that the car is a 1966. GM used the 1966 filler door assembly, GM #3874528, to SERVICE all 1963-67 Corvette applications from late 1967 until it was discontinued about 5 years ago. So, if one is looking for an NOS filler door, the 1966 door is the absolute easiest to find. For ANY of the other years, to find an NOS assembly, you'd have to find one that's been sitting in a box for 42+ years.
