    Tire/Wheel Dollies

Who has used wheel/tire dollies? I need a heavy duty set to move my current restoration project around the shop, it takes up more room that two Vettes. Looking for suggestions

I have a set of four (4) that came in quite handy on a Chevelle project a while back. Friction was just about perfect on my garage floor...car was not in any danger of rolling on it's own, but I could move/rotate it by myself with a bit of elbow grease. I've since purchased a lift, so I can't use the dollies like I used to in my current setup.

Mine look kinda like these but with sides to more confidently hold tire or jack stand:

The advantage to these types with the flat bottom plate is that you can put a jackstand on it, instead of the tire, which is great for earlier stages of project.

The ones with the hand jacks on them are also nice in their own way since you don't need a floor jack to 'install' them. However, these don't have the jack stand capability which was important to me for with my project.

You've probably also seen the ones with 'rounded' bottom plate, but these can't support the jackstand usage.

Bottom line is that they are quite handy and work very well. Choosing between styles that fit your needs is the only question.

    Hope this helps.

I believe most wheel dollies are rated for about 1500 lbs, which is fine for Corvettes but it sounds like you need something with a rating about twice that ( unless your project has 8 wheels on the ground!)

Go Jacks work great. No clue what they're rated at though.

I have seen some advertised at 2,500# each. I am not sure what quality they are.

              Dick,

This company claims to have have upgradeable casters capable of supporting 10k lbs. Made in the USA as well. I do not have first hand experience with this company.

The set I have are rated at 2000lbs each, so they are not quite there, but I thought they made heavier models when I bought mine. They were made by NMW RollMasters in NJ, but they seem to be out of business now. They are very, very good quality if you can find them used somewhere.

As Barry mentioned, there are some 2500lbs each rated sets out there. No knowledge of quality.

I spotted this on eBay: 24"x8" made with 3/8" plate (wowzers) and supposedly rated at 8000lbs each! Priced accordingly too! Search for 'Tire Skate 8,000lbs' (don't forget the comma after the 8).

What on earth kind of Corvette are you working on???

the gojaks are sweet because they are self contained jacks with no hydraulics. that means you don't have to use a floor jack to raise the car onto the roller skate type. i get away with just 2 but 4 would give even better mobility. there are pictures in the "show me your garage thread".

I think the size of the wheels makes the pushing effort less. The wider wheels or larger diameter will be the best choice.

                      Dick,
I love my Go-Jacks, but they were kind of pricey. Also, the 6000# rating is for 4. The link featured in post #7 looks like a good HD dolly with the HD casters and seem to be a great value. Chip.

Chipper, er Paul, those are the ones that I leaning toward. I just wanted to see if anyone else had opinions. Good response, and I appreaciate it. Keep the answers coming.

Chip, I think that you have seen my "little" project. The big yellow International that was out back of my shop. I am trying to get seriously started before I get too old to work on it

                          Dick,
I do remember that rig and that you had big plans for it. I look forward to seeing the progress. I think it will be a "interesting" project, but I don't think there will be anything "little" about it! I hope to see you Saturday. Chip.
