C3-1971: Rt Rear wheel chirp (shot in the dark)

This question may be a shot in the dark, but I'll ask anyway...

I recently had all new ss calipers put on my 71 small block. The rear rotors needed replaced too. Brakes work fine but noticed a "chirping" sound from the right rear. It doesn't get faster or louder as my speed increases....just a constant "chirping" sound. Not sure if it's brake related or not. Thought I would ask and see if anyone experienced this before.

    Thanks,
    Greg

Sounds like the emergency brake, but I would think the speed of the "chirp" would increase with speed ?????

I had a similar deal with my 73 when an emergency brake spring broke and was rubbing inside the drum in hat setup. Sounded like a U joint at first.

      Had an issue very similar.
It too occured after some work on my rear brakes.

Turned out being the clip that holds the emergency brake cable tight against he trailing arm.

This is the clip that looks like a set of pointed mouse ears

The ears can not be installed facing outward (towards the rim).
It will make contact with the wheel weights as the rim/tire spins.

This drove me nuts for a month. Then by accident I happened to notice the scratch marks on the weights.

      Hope this may help ...

Thus, the vendors call them "Mickey Mouse" clips

Bill - was this an easy fix? Do I need to remove the wheel or can I see the issue from underneath. Just curious. Thanks for your help. I saw your car at Old Town in January....gorgeous!

              Greg,

takes 5 minutes after you have the tire off.

there is a bracket welded to the trailing arm that the emergency brake cable passes through. The mickey-mouse clip that holds it in position is on the bottom side of the bracket. It is usually not under great pressure and can be removed with pliers.

Just be sure the ears do not point out towards the rim.
