    '65 speedometer

Just occured today. On braking to a stop heard a little ticking in the speedo. Next at approx 30mph the speedo jumps to 70-75 mph; flutters a bit but stays at that registered speed until slowing to stop, which it then drops to zero. Then it does it again. Searched the archives and am a bit confused. I have not pulled anything to check yet but I'm wondering if it is the internal housing with the magnet? I'm not at all versed in how this thing works internally. So, looking for some guidance. If I need to send it off for rebuild who would you guys recommend. Turnaround time not critical but I really don't want this thing down for 3 months.

so, anyone have a diagnosis for me? thanks Blake

Does your car have the original tach cable in it? I'd look at the internal cable wire and make sure that it's okay. The tach wire can be removed, re-lubricated and then re-installed. If it's okay, then it may be the tach itself.

    Good luck.

Meant the speedo cable--not the tach cable. If you can get your car on a lift, it's not that tough to remove from the tranny. Then remove from the gauge cluster and check.

thanks Anthony, One question though; If the cable was damaged/twisted/ or even broken how could that cause the speedo to run 2 or 3x the normal running speed?

            Re: '65 speedometer

I've had a couple of cars with this problem, both tach and speedo.
Turned out to be a single strand of the cable broken and sticking up to snag inside the casing then release, causing the "Jump".

thanks Anthony and Mike. Was talking to a friend last night and mentioned the problem. He basically said the same thing that both of you have pointed out. Will pull the cable, inspect and relube if not damaged. Learn something every day. BW

Make sure you replace the casing and not just the cable. The inside of the casing wears and causes cable whip & noise & erractic pointer movement.
