    71 Alarm Problem

I rebuilt the horn for my alarm, it works. I installed it and it will not work in the car. My rear key switch is broken and I am trying to locate one but meanwhile I thought if I jumped the wire connectors, (close the switch), all would test out. Ok...wrong.

I have power to the mounting bolt. If I ground the spade connector on the horn it will blow, constant, not through the flasher.

As you may know it is not in the service or AIM manuals, so it is wing it. I believe that it works on varying the ground. I can hear the relay clicking in the box on the pass side when I plug on the female connector to the horn.

I have pulled out the door contact switch and cleaned the disc where the three wires, blue, white and black join up. All to no avail. Any ideas??

    Thanks,

    Ken

Ken, you are correct if you tie the rear switch wires together, this arms the alarm, you should hear the relay click inside the car when touching the wires together.

The way in works is the door and hood switchs complete the ground circut, when you open the door or hood the alarm pulses, witch is done through the flasher mounted next to the relay.

I can tell you that the ground and power lead to alarm horn must be clean and free or corosion these connections tend to get that way after 35+ yrs.the spad that connects to the horn, you ay have to remove from the plastic connector and take some steel wool or lite sand paper to clean.and the same to the ground eyelet connector.

Thanks, Ed. I may have a door switch or a general ground type problem, flasher, relay or some connection?

With no electrical schematics it is a think and test challenge.

Ken, a smiple test of power to the system is just by listining to the relay click when you hook the switch wires together. if the relay does click , then is the ground side- switchs etc.

but this doesn't pretain to the entire circut, remember the wires at horn, if you have a simple test lamp check for power at the spad on the horn(when the switch wires are connected). and use the stud on horn for the ground and that should light the test lamp.

let me know how you make out I have a shop manuel for my 72 car.

Good, I get it. I will check tomorrow and let you know.

          Thanks so much.

Still looking for an alarm switch with a "B" key.

Check that the three brass tips on the wires stick out enough that all three contact the ring on the switches. They sometimes they get pushed back or broken off.

              Thanks Lyle.

That is part of the diagnostic problem without an electrical schematic.
I am working both doors and the hood to see what is missing.

No PV at this point. I was hoping someone else had a similar problem that would give me a fast track. I have many other cool things to accomplish.
With the spring coming, I would like to get to the drive mode. This may be a lost, delayed, year for me.

Ken, The lectric Limited poster schematic has the wirning diagram for the alarm on it. Do you have one of those? I can probably copy it and e-mail it to you if you like. I'm sure there is little difference between '71 and '72.
