electrical testing

I need to get into checking why my heater fan and radio are not working. I've heard that I can damage the dual points if I just turn the key on and leave it. What wires should I disconnect from distributor and/or coil to avoid damaging points while I check out the electrics. Thanks

Disconnect the key side wire going to the ballast resistor on the fire wall.
