    N-11 Exhaust Question.

I have read archival threads about the N-11 off-road, and am going to buy them for my '66 roadster. I do not know if I can just get the mufflers or do i need the pipes also? The car has a muffler system that was installed about 4 years ago with very little mileage on it. Any ideas or comments? Thanks.

      Jerry -

Corvette Central has the new N-11 system both ways - intermediate pipe and muffler as a welded assembly as original, or clamp-on mufflers only.

And Gardners doesn't. Welded assembly only.

Gardners sells their exhaust UNWELDED only, you fit it together and then weld after it is adjusted properly. Had mine seal welded by a muffler shop after temporarily clamping muffler to exhaust pipe. Very easy to install the way Gardner provides the system, final adjustments are a snap. They sell the muffler separately I'm sure, give them a call, or www.gardnerexhaust.com and reveiw their systems. Listen to the 64 FI sound clip, that's my baby.

Dan, I asked Gardner about this in the past few days, and they said that they sell 'concourse' exhaust systems only. I don't know if this means you can buy the muffler only, but to me it means you have to buy the pipes too, welded together or not.

One thing to think about when buying a 'muffler only' to adapt to someone elses pipes, are they compatible? Long ago, I had a set of GM NOS 59 round HP mufflers and ordered the pipes from a vendor. Found out only the vendors mufflers would correctly fit his pipes! MUCH bending was required to save the pipes to align correctly. In my opinion, buy the matching set to begin with unless you own a muffler shop! These are made as 'sets' and the time you'll save may be worth a few extra dollars in the long run!

Are the Gardner exhaust systems now correct? The one's they sold before the pipe would have to be welded where the clamp was, that is wrong for off road exhaust the weld is at the muffler housing.

Would I need the whole system with headers, just the mufflers,or the mufflers with the front and rear pipes? What would that depend upon? Anyone, Buehler?

                    Re: N-11 Exhaust Question.

With recent threads about the N-11 exhaust, there has been a lot of additional info given about the off road exhaust that was not out there when I purchased mine from Allen's Stainless Exhaust about 5 years ago. I have read great reviews about Gardner's Exhaust but also received valuable information by watching a video on the N-11 exhaust that is located on the Michigan Chapter website. Go to http://www.michiganncrs.org/page1/page1.html and scroll down 9 windows to the development of the N11 Corvette Off-Road muffler. I think you will get a better understanding of the entire system and then make an informed purchased. It is too expensive of a purchase to get it wrong.

                      Terry,

I purchased my off road exhaust from Allen's. Poor fit and quality of work! Mike Allen's shop foreman wasn't much help as he attempted to find any reason why it was my fault....my frame...my engine, my exhaust manifolds...any reason why their system wouldn't work on my car. No one at that came close to saying "maybe we goofed and mismanufactured a system". The best I got from the foremen is "we've been making these along time". Would consider Corvette Central's or Gardner's next time.....won't ever be a Allen's Exhaust.

Always think it's a good idea to buy a whole matching system. Gardners is an excellent fitting system, like I said earlier, sometimes you waste a lot of time and effort trying to 'marry' different vendors components. Haven't asked Eric if they sell separate mufflers. Contact him and see what he can do.

Dan, I know from Eric that they only sell the entire system... I tried to purchase just the mufflers.

In my case (65FI) I have the original pipes in great condition but not so for the mufflers so I was seeking mufflers only.

From the UTube video referenced in the post's it appears Corvette Central has as close as one can get. And you don't have top buy the entire system

Greg, have you tried to get NOS N11 mufflers only? I believe they sold them that way also. The cost will be scary. If CC has mufflers only to add to original pipes, might make it a good sounding system again. Are they welded directly onto the muffler like the originals? If not, find out what their method is for attachment, to look correct etc. Regards,
