    63 Fastener Help

Trying to determine what survivor cars have for the following 63 fasteners. I couldn't cross reference to other locations in AIM.

    1. Rear Valance Screw 121893 AIM 1/B5. Need length, head markings and finish.
    2. Rear Exhaust Hanger to Frame 120228 AIM 8/7. Need length, head markings and finish.
    3. Lower Radiator Support to "L" Bracket 180086 AIM 12/A7. 5/16x18x1.875 length. Need head markings. Finish should be cad.
    4. Front License Bracket to Bumpers 180018 AIM 14/A2. Need length, head markings and finish.

    Thanks
    Jeff

Only one of the above-referenced was ever available in SERVICE. That was the GM #180018. It was a 1/4-20 hex head bolt of 5/8" length and with 1/2" of thread. It was GM-280M (SAE grade 5; 3 lines) and was zinc plated. I have no information on headmarkings.

Jeff and Joe, 180018 head logo is a plain "P" logo
I never could find one that didn't have three grade marks on it.
But I have been told it's just a plain P logo. JD

Jeff, You will get more response if you can possibly tell our members more details on the hardware as few will look in the aims for each bolt.

#1. Head is TR. #1 bolt holds the rear valence to the quarter panel on the bottom left and right corners. JD

          Jeff,

here are a few pictures of some of the bolts you want to know about.
          First is 121893.
          Second is 180018.
          Third is 120228.
I have several of 180086 but will have to take pictures of them but for now the most common headmarking for that is WB grade 5.

John D. the grade 2 P bolts I have seen were valve cover bolts. Most original P license plate bracket bolts I have seen were grade 5. I have loads of grade 2's in different lengths from 1/2" to 1" but never removed them from a license plate frame.

            Joe/John/Ken/Rich,

Thanks for the outstanding information. I've been trying for the past year to figure out details on these fasteners. It's awesome having technical experts to help guide the youngsters along.

              Hi Rich and Ken.
Bob Jorjorian and I were talking about the license plate bracket bolts. Here is what the two of us have observed over the years on original cars. No grade lines on the P bolts.
I also discussed this with Bob Gregory when he judged my 63 at a Marlborough Regional. He definitely re-inforced what I thought I knew. No grade marks on the P bolts.
Now lets forget what's original for a second and use logic instead.
Why in the world would you need a grade 5 bolt to hold on a license plate bracket??? Now logic doesn't always come into play but it does make sense.
Refer to page 63 in the 5th edition. "The front license plate bracket is mounted to lower side of the bumper bar by two hex-head cad plated bolts with known head markings "P" and "E". "
My 63 has plain "P" bolts.
Typical repros are grade 5 "P".
I bet it's easier to find the plain E bolts than the P.

                Hey John,

thanks for the info. I wonder if thats what is typical for 64-67's also I know several survivors I worked on had grade 5. I will definitly check into this further.

                Rich

One mre question was the E centered or of to the right at the 3 o'clock position. I know some early E bolts have the E in the 3 oclock position. And I have many of thoses from a engine shop buy out I got 20 years ago.

The GM #180018 were GM 280-M material grade (SAE grade 5) and should have had 3 radial lines indicating that. Whether these were the bolts that were always used for the 1963 license plate application I do not know, But, they were, apparently, the ones specified and, in any event, whenever they were used, they should have had 3 radial lines.
