Hi All,
I'm installing new carpet in my '71 base engine coupe. For the front pieces on both sides, I know there are rubber plugs/fasteners that hold the forward-most parts of those carpet pieces in place. Oddly enough, I still have all of those original fasteners for both the front and rear areas.
For the passenger side front, it appears there are 3 rubber plugs that hold the carpet in place, and that's what I see in the assembly manual, and that's what the 70-72 CTIM&JG tells me. My question is, how far up is the carpet supposed to extend on the passenger side?
The piece I have now butts up perfectly to the firewall insulation piece.
For the driver side forward, The assembly manual appears to indicate that the carpet is held in place with 4 rubber plugs/fasteners. The CTIM&JG says there are 3. Which is correct?
I see 5 rubber plugs up forward on the driver's side. The piece of carpet I have appears to be fitted in as good as it will go on the driver side, but there is no way the inboard plug (which is up higher than the other 4 plugs) comes near the carpet. The other plugs will work (except that the plug just underneath the fuse panel looks as if it would be difficult and would only catch the leading edge of the carpet). Also, how far up should this carpet go?
Right now, it butts up nicely against the outcropping of the plastic piece that's attached to the firewall with the rubber plug under the fuse panel and the inboard-most plug that's too high for the carpet to reach. The 3 middle plugs would easily able to hold the carpet in place, if the correct answer is that 3 plugs hold the carpet in place on the driver side forward. And, should the carpet go under the plastic piece, or on top of the edge and butt up against the outcropping of the plastic piece as I have it now?
These are long-winded questions, but I just want to make this as right as I can.
I made an attempt to look in the archives to see if this was discussed but I'm not real adept at finding my way around in there just yet. If someone knows the answers to my questions, or can direct me to where the answers will be, that would be great!
The interior of in my car was previously the deluxe set-up and my car came originally with standard so that's why I'm going back to standard.
I'm hoping to have the car ready for its first judging at a mini-meet our chapter is having in the latter part of June. After owning the car for over 31 years, I figured it's time to make it right!
I'll probably have more carpet and interior questions as I proceed to the back area, once I have the fronts secured in place.
Thank you!
