    Re: Engine Backfire

Hopefully, it is a minor issue. What does everyone think about a leaking intake manifold gasket? That's what I found on my 62. Major backfire all of a sudden. I thought I had much more serious issues.

One overlooked issue is the small wire that grounds the breaker plate to the distributor housing (under the screw that holds the vacuum advance). Had that problem once on my wife's 442, drove me NUTS trying to figure out what was wrong! Then had to replace the exhaust that I had blown out!

I'm sorry, but I do get some enjoyment out of reading the horror stories associated with points/condensor ignitions, i.e. blown mufflers, back fires, after fires, and the list goes on. This is specially true when those reporting or commenting are the purists who claim knowledge of failed Pertronix conversion systems, i.e. "just shut down leaving us dead in the water". Sure sounds a darn sight better than the results noted above that CAN'T be all that good for your engine.
