    1962 oil filler cap

    The Judging Guide for 1962 lists a cadmium oil fill cap for early 1962, and a flash-chrome oil fill cap for the remainder of the year. My car is #5106. Would someone know which cap would be correct for this car, with a 300 h.p. and PCV valve for CA?
    Thanks,
    Ken

    I don't know about the filler cap. However, I believe this is the California PCV valve.

      Definitely flash-chrome by that point in time.

        Joe and Mike, My PCV valve is an AC-CV590 that does not quite look like the valve in your picture. Perhaps it was not the original PCV valve.

        Thanks for the clarification on the oil filler cap.

        Your help is much appreciated.

          I think a CV-590 may also have been originally used or, perhaps, even exclusively used. However, the one pictured is the one that the late Dale Pearman considered to be the correct valve. In fact, he once told me that this was the only original part for what turned out to be his last 1962 restoration that he could not find no matter where he looked. He tried to get me to sell him this valve, but I would not given my policy of not selling parts. Of course, I regret that now. I could have given him the valve; I've done that for other pieces.

            That's what I would expect to see for an original 62 PCV valve.

              Do you mean the CV-590 or the one I have pictured?

                The one you have pictured--sorry for the lack of clarity.

                  Guys;
                  Don't forget that the oil fill cap you need for the PCV equiped must be the
                  vented type. The engine should have the draft tube blocked and a hose there in place of it. If not vented, the engine will suck all of the oil out and smoke like crazy.

                    Ken--
                    That's not supported by anything in the AIM or my experience with factory-equipped RPO 242 solid-lifter cars. They obviously have the road draft tube replaced with a fitting and hose there--there would be no place to complete the routing for the PCV valve. HOWEVER--every factory-equipped 242 car with solid lifters that I have documented has a closed (non-vented) oil fill cap. My daily driver 62 fuelie has a closed cap and RPO 242 on it, and there are no oil usage issues with it at all.
