        It's terrible news for GM.

        If he can retire in peace, he's much more optimistic about his lasting impact on GM than I. Car guys are born, not made. It's more than simply inspiring a burning desire to build superior products...they have to know what a superior product looks like.

        But...you can hardly blame Lutz. He's 78 years old; everybody has to quit working sometime. As he said, let no one say anything about this being an early retirement

          If he was as good as people think he is, he would have found an groomed someone to take over - who is his replacement?

            I worked for Bob several times at Chrysler in the 90's, and sent him a congratulatory note this morning; told him to enjoy his retirement, and suggested that a high-speed, low pass in his MiG over Washington, D.C. with guns blazing might be appropriate...

                The Wall Street Journal said today he felt his role was increasingly undefined under the new GM chairman. I love his quotes: The last one I remember recently was along the lines of "being economically independant I can basically say or do as I please"....I guess he just did..."long live maximum Bob"....

                  I didn't know all of Mr. Lutz contributions, but I assume with his departure there will be no one left from the old (15 + years) of the Corvette production staff and or promoters within General Motors. Is John Cafaro still at GM? Anyway, I have to wonder where we go from here ?

                      Don't know Tom, but given the government intervention in the day to day at GM, even if he was as charismatic and a real leader as Bob was, it will be difficult in this environment. Would be nice to see some fresh designs, the back ends are all looking the same with the top-chop tail lights and edge design. Time to set the new styling trend with the Cadillac and fix the fenders of the trucks IMHO.

                        John;

                        Bet he wouldn't have much trouble rounding up some wingmen to fly with him over DC. Blaze of glory!

                          While the government has invested a huge amount of money in GM, to my knowledge, there is no evidence in the public domain there is intervention in GM's day to day operations beyond pressuring change in top management to achieve financial results. If other changes result, it is an indirect effect of turning the company around financially.

                          The government was ALREADY involved in telling car makers how to design their cars, if not style them. The government, after all, can make law that requires what they want in design without the investment of tax payer money. Historically, it's been about safety, emissions, and efficiency. I'm much more concerned that congress thinks it knows how to design national health care, than whether they make our cars ugly.

                            Too bad, he is a great car visionary. I am happy now I ordered and took delivery of a new 2010 Camaro (#223 off the line) early last year. I think that car will be known as his last car, and she is a beauty too, IMO.
