I need to replace the seal inside the oil filter cannister but for the life of me I can't see how to remove the retainer. It's not the typical circlip. I'm sure a very elementary question but I'm stumped!!

Re: C2 oil filter housing repair
Not real certan as to what seal you are looking for, if it is the one at the top that the can meets just remove the two bolts holding the bypass assembly and pull the bypass out. That will either result in the flat rubber gasket coming out with the bypass housing or allow you access to remove it with a pointed tool.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: C2 oil filter housing repair
I'm referring to the internal parts of the cannister. Isn't there a felt or rubber seal inside the can fitting over the bolt and another copper washer on the outside bolt head? I've got a leak around the bolt. It's that retainer around the bolt inside the can that I can't quite figure out how to remove so I can get everything out. thanks for the reply. Blake- Top

Re: C2 oil filter housing repair
The bolt is welded to the cone shaped retainer, just support the outer edge of the bottom of the canister and give the pointed end of the threaded shaft a good whack and you will break the weld. It is not necessary to reweld as it was only done for convience of assembly in the engine plant.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: C2 oil filter housing repair
Long Island Corvette supply sells a repair kit for the oil cannister. You might want to get one. If you break the weld every time you take the cannister down you're going to have a big mess. The kit contains a washer that crimps onto the rod to keep it in place and the copper washer. It was easy to install and stopped the leak in my cannister.- Top

Re: C2 oil filter housing repair
The original canisters are sure worth saving/repairing. They don't make a replacement of that heavy gauge material any more as the dies are long gone. The replacements are almost half that gauge. I have one of each; my original needs new silk screening, but I feel more "road safe" using it, whereas the replacement looks better, but I fear a road puncture when I use it. I know I'm just being paranoid as the spin on filters used on later years are much more vulnerable.
