    1968 Underbody Heat Shield

Greetings Again....i Have Another Questiion About My F-15 9107 Car Concerning Underbody Heat Shields. The Judging Manual Seems To Indicate That The Heat Shield Was Held In Place By Clips On The Inside Of The Transmission Tunnel Fiberglass. The Repro Part Comes With Rivets And Clips But There Are No Holes In The Floorpan Of My Car. The Floorpan Is Original To The Car And I'm Wondering If The Early And Late Issue Is A Factor Is Determining What Is Correct. Thanks For The Help. Don.

The original clips are probably still in the underbody. Mine were. 95% of the old insulation blanket was gone, but the clips were there.

On my December '67 built car, the clips that hold the insulation in the transmission tunnel are pointed and penetrate the insulation and then are bent over to hold the insulation in place. I cannot say for sure but I would think that the clips are held by rivets.

thanks, terry. that sounds consistent with the contents of the repro heat shield. i just don't understand why there are no holes in the floorpan on my car.

                Donald,

I think you're car is too early for the "factory" underbody heat shields. My car (1-24-68 / #9736) has no evidence of these shields. The JG says the shields were added after VIN 9939.

My car does have the insulation under the trans tunnel.

Some earlier cars had the underbody shields installed by the dealer as a response to a TSB.

                Good luck,
                Anthony

My Dec car has the trans tunnel heat shield and two plastic shields on the lower fire wall.

During the 68 model year the combination of insulation and shields used changed a number of times so it can be very difficult to know what is correct. The JG does not do a good job of describing the changes. Also with many cars having been restored and modified by service bulletins over the year it makes it even more difficult.

Configuration 1 - Early cars received only the U-shaped insulation above the transmission. It was held with 4 clips mounted high on the transmission tunnel and adhesive. They also had a triangular splash shield at the bottom of the fire wall. The shield was attached with screws to the frame and a bracket riveted to the body at the lower toe pan.

Configuration 2 - Starting with serial number 9939 (according to the TSB) a larger flat piece of insulation was added. It covered the bottom of the floor pan back to the transmission cross member and wrapped up around the lower portion of the transmission tunnel and firewall. It was held on by numerous clips in these areas. The transmission insulation and triangular splash shields continued as before.

This is the configuration my April built (16,4XX) has. It is shown in the picture below minus the triangular shields so you can see the insulation.

My 68 is FEB built and has the configuration 2. Only a piece of the insulation left on drivers side after 42 years and the tunnel insulation.
