Hello. Am looking forward to getting to know you all. Have had experience with some members on another forum and have found them to be a wonderful group for knowledge and assistance, so I figured I'd join the organization!

My questions relate to '69's. Have found two part numbers that purport be "assembly line" correct for the temperature sending unit on a 427. 1513462 and 6400759. Both have the correct bayonet pin but the 1513462 has multiple ridges for the connector to grasp. Would dearly like to have the one the car left the factory with. Would someone know the answer?

Second, what publication/CD etc would be my best source for determining part numbers in the future? I have the '69 AIM and Bizzoco's book but as you all know there are many items neither address.

Welcome Dan -- I assUme that is what you want to be called.

I can't tell you about your part number question, but someone will.

For part numbers you have the two best books. After those the Chevrolet P&A (Parts & Accessories) books are helpful. The P&A books for Corvette began in 1969 (prior to that the Corvette parts were included with other Chevrolet parts in a very large book). The Corvette P&A books were published more or less quarterly until 1982 -- when paper publication ceased. Your best choice, if you can find one, would be a early 1970 dated Corvette P&A book. You can make a lifetime avocation of collecting these parts books. I have about three feet of bookshelf full of them -- and I have a modest collection hat mostly was accumulated more than twenty-five years ago.

Now that you are here you can depend on Joe Lucia for all your part number questions, within reason -- and save yourself the trouble of looking for these books and the even more difficult task of learning how to use them.

I can tell you, for certain, that at least one 1969 Corvette originally used the GM #6400759 "smooth" pin temperature sender. Also, it's the one that GM originally cataloged for 1969 Corvette applications. And, in addition, it's the only type I've ever seen on original 1969 Corvettes.

The GM #1513462 was used on 1969 Chevelles, Chevy II, and Camaro's with guages. They were also used on some Pontiacs and Cadillacs of the period.

So, why would they have used different temp senders for Corvettes as opposed to the other models? I have no idea. However, the switches were installed at the assembly plants, so there may have been some difference in "supply channels". Or, perhaps and for whatever reason, there was a difference in the connector used on the Corvette wiring harnesses as compared to the other models.

Now, does it matter? As a matter of fact, it does not. Both the 6400759 and 1513462 are identically calibrated. As far as I can tell, the only difference is the configuration of the pin. Once the connector is installed no one will ever know the difference as, from what I understand, it's not a requirement to remove the connector for judging.

I think you will have a difficult time finding NOS examples of either of these temp senders. So, I'd grab the first one that shows up.

Hi Dan,
Welcome to the club. A friend of mine in FL has an original 1969 one owner so if you have other questions let me know. Of course you can't beat the NCRS board for the best information. There is more info here than any other website in the world, because these guys started the whole restoration movement. Glad you are a member!
