    NCRS restorer CD problem?

I have the new 56-57 Corvette Restorer CD. When placed in the computer it will spin for 5 mins and nothing promps me up on the screen. Do I need a program to open the disk?

I also ran into this problem with the '61-62 version of the cd. I finally did get the home page screen after 4.5 minutes. (yes I timed it)! Tech support thought I was using Vista operating system, which I am not. But with some testing of my own I figured I needed more RAM in my computer to run it, so I upgraded to 2gb of RAM. Now it only takes 3.5 minutes to come up on my screen. I doubt that this is correct but have learned to live with it. It is definately worth the wait but you can go get a coffee while the cd reader chugs away at it. I would be interested if anyone else has had this problem with these cds. It is not the most sophisticated
database program that I have seen. It has a few quirks that should be addressed and updated.

Windows-based computers can be set to do different things with CDs or DVDs, depending on the type of files encountered when the disc is being initially read. Your computer might be set to do 'nothing'.

After inserting the disc, open Windows Explorer and navigate to the CD drive. Try clicking on the file icon and see what happens.

After the initial install, I saved it to my hard drive so now it opens immediately without the disc.

Install? What Install? There is no Install program on the cd I got. It just autoruns the cd when I put it in. Did you just copy the entire cd to a folder and run it from there?

When I first ran the disc, it installed a program named "authorware" or something similar. I believe that is what takes so long when trying to run the disc. Then saved the CD in a folder. Once you do that, you no longer need the disc. I've done it on my desktop and laptop computers.

The front end of the software that runs the discs sorely needs to be updated. Was written for Windows 95 or maybe even 3.1

So Dick, is there an actual INSTALL program on the CD that installs the software onto the computer hard drive? That has not happened with my CD. I have to run the program from the CD every time I want to use it.

I have never tried to install it on my hard disk. The program needs to be updated to where either Windows Media Player or Realplayer will open it.

I have just done an experiment with it and indeed if you COPY the NCRS folder from the cd to a new folder on your hard drive it will boot up to the opening screen and run much faster. By coping the NCRS folder it also copies the sub folders with all the issues in them. Then you do not even need the cd to use it. Just go to the NCRS folder and create a shortcut of the authorware icon and drag it to your desktop. Then double click that icon and within a few seconds it's running. Much better!

Glad you got it figured out. I thought everyone knew how to do that or I would have posted instructions years ago. It's nice have it on multiple computers without needing the disc as well as having the program start up in only a few seconds.

                          Yep.
Did this years ago - though Dick is correct. The underlying program is severely in need of updating.

Maybe someone (Dick) on the Board (Dick) could bring this up at the next meeting (Dick) ?

I was tempted to do this sooner but got no instructions at all with the disk so was hesitant to just copy it over to the HD. A short page with instructions would have been helpful. No problem now tho. THanks for the help.
