    Regional Judging Meet Queston...

I'm having my car judged at the Gettysburg Regional in May. I have to have my car there on Thursday to get registered and they make sure all my papers are in order. All the cars have to be in place by 5PM on Thursday. My car is not getting judged till Saturday though.

My question is when I bring my car in to register it on Thursday, do they do the Ops check at that time or do they do the Ops on Saturday and do they do a cold start test? Thanks, PT

I'm having my '66 done. As I understand it your ops will be done on the day of the judging. And yes it is a cold start.

I would recommend checking it. Not hard to do some morning in the garage.
They will want to see that the choke functions, that the idle speed with choke on is higher, and that it settles down to a normal idle after that.

At some Regionals it is done the day you arrive, i.e. Thursday.
however since this one is outdoors it "may" be on the day of your judging.

It never pays to "assume" something will function once you arrive. You are guaranteed then that it won't.

don't risk the deduct if the cold start test fails. if ya don't want to park the vette outside in the cold, put a dozen or so ice cubes in a baggy, lay on top the intake for an hour or so in the garage(i assume its a heated garage), then do the test. good luck in gettysburg. see ya there.mike

I'll be getting there a little after lunch on May 6th, so the engine will be hot. I agree that the cold start test will be done the day of Judging so the engine is stone cold.

I always check everything the day before any Judging meet. Then when I drive up there is when stuff goes wrong. The way I look at it, I have a 50/50 chance. It either will pass or it won't pass!

So, all the sections would be done on Saturday? Like exterior, chassis, mechanical, interior? If so, that is good, you have time from Thursday PM until Saturday to remove and /or replace all the offending items the judges would deduct for that make the car a pleasure to drive a few hundred miles to the show.

That would be a no, no!

See Section 2, item #18, in the Judging Reference Manual:

"From the time divisional judging begins, whether one or two days, until it ends, cars entered in Flight Judging either day will be assumed ready to be judged as presented. There is no allowable provision for any repair, alteration, addition, deletion or changing of parts on a car during judging except as specifically outlined under FAILURE TO START. Additionally, no auxiliary electrical power source may be utilized, such as a battery charger or electrical generator."

I suppose that since my car is going to sit outside for three days, that no one would object to a car cover once you're parked in the judging area. PT

                      Those are fine.

If you're going to swap from "driving parts" to "show parts" do it Thursday when you arrive.

                      Been there, done that.

                        Michael,
Flight Judging is done on Friday and Saturday at all Regionals in which I have participated. Friday is for some years, Saturday the remainder. On whichever day your car is judged, judging of exterior, interior, chassis and mechanical will all be done on that day.

                        Best regards,

The '67 big blocks will be judged on Friday. Since I have a lowly '67 L-79 327/350 (BB delete), I have to wait until Saturday. Also I cannot judge on Saturday, on the same day as my car is getting judged. That seems kind of silly since I would never end up being assigned to judge my own car but I know next to nothing about the BB's!

Patrick don't you want to be with your car when it is judged? Most folks do, and the judges will find it a PITA to chase you down if you are judging elsewhere when your car is being judged.

BTW: There is a requirement your car cover be removed during judging, even if your car is not being judged that day.

A reading of the Judging Reference Manual might be in your best interest. I am sure it will not dissuade you from your position that there are too many rules, but it might help put you to sleep.

When you have been around as long as Terry and myself, you can put car owners names to most of the rules. The rules are a result of "opportunities" that have come up over the years. Example..the rule about performance enhancing changes on PV cars. That was written due to some (me) of us using MSD boxes, coils, and plug wires when we PV'ed our cars. Trust me, the rules were not made just to be making rules.
