    69 Speedo Problem

When the car is cold my speedo doesn't work but the odometer does. As the car warms up (about 3 miles) the speedo comes alive. Is it the cable or the speedo? I have the dash apart and this would be a good time to take care of this problem.

    Thanks in advance.

Anthony, there maybe a few points that that may need some light oil such as 3in1 oil , remove speedo from bezel and look to see if you can access the gearing , and the moving parts, use a drill driver with a make shift adapter to rotate the speedo (make sure you have the right direction)sometimes all the moving parts dry-up the grease of lube that the factory used 40+ years.

While the dash is out lube-up the speedo and tach cables, a coating of white grease on the cables will help extend the life of cables.

With a problem as you describe, the malfunction is almost certainly in the instrument, itself. I would remove it and send it out to a competent instrument repair shop. Given the fact that the speedometer has likely never been serviced in its 41 year life, you won't be wasting any money.

Joe do you have any idea how much it would cost?

I do not. It's been so long since I had mine done that even if I could remember the cost, it wouldn't be applicable now, anyway. I'd call around to a few places like D&M, Corvette Clocks by Roger and Instrument Services Co which is somewhere in northern Illinois or southern Wisconsin. Also, United Instrument in Syracuse, NY.

Price is based upon what you want done i.e new speedo head, tach head, worm gear, jewel cup, restencile numbers, new lenses the list goes on.

I had my 68 tach and speedo redone after the speedo malfunctioned for $451 from Ricks Restoration Service in Joppa Md. 410-538-4528.

He did such a nice job, I had him do my 67 instrument cluster, headlight motors, clock, radio and wiper motor on a car I'm doing a frame off restoration on ($1721).

He was easy to work with.

I sent the speedo to Roger Scott in Palm Beach FL. He called me on Friday with what he had discovered. 1. The speedo was rebuilt in 1982. 2.When they rebuilt it they put grease on the drive to stop the needle from bouncing and went a little overboard. Roger cleaned the speedo tested and is sending it back already!! $50.00. He seems to be a very nice and honest man.

Thank you to Anthony Sommese for informing me about Roger
