    65 Frame markings-looking for pictures

Have a friend during a frame off on a 65. Trying to convince him to doing it right, and redoing the frame stencil and markings.

I have pictures of my 67 (AO Smith) but not sure they are right for a 65 St. Louis car. His frame has been repainted somewhere along the line and there are no existing markings.

Does someone have a picture out there, or can tell me the correct markings.

      Gerard,

Here's a few chassis pictures of the '65 St. Louis built convertible #22161 that I am restoring.

          Dave -

If you have a St. Louis body, the body build date code on the trim tag will generally be the same or one day ahead of the "pull date" scrawled on the frame. If it's an A.O. Smith body, use the VIN and the calculators will give you an approximation of its production date within a day or two either way.

Jerry. Here are some photos that I took from my Arizona barn find--1965 L78 car right after I pulled the body. My car was put in storage in a desert barn in 1972 and stayed there until I bought it in 2007. Each photo shows original paint daubs.

Tony -- Interesting; your # 233xx has the same original markings (driveshaft, rear calipers, and half shafts) as my L78 # 2356x. Looking at the seller's pics of the car you bought, and judging by the dead leaves in the engine comp't, I'd say they left it OUTSIDE the barn for some time .

Tony & Wayne Noticed the drive shaft has the ring paint marks towards the rear end! I just picked up an original drive shaft with the ring paint on that same end.
So it would appear those ring(s) could be on either end, think judges expect them on the transmission end so its good to see more originals at the diff end.

Wayne. I'll have to forward some of my other 'before' pictures to you taken when the car first arrived. My wife could have planted flowers in all the dirt that had accumulated inside the car body. We all called it the 'mud car'. It was a fun project bringing back a real L78 car back to life.

Alan. Some of the paint daub restoration that I've done will never be seen again (because the body covers them up). I restored all of mine even though some won't be seen. The driveshaft paint can't be seen during judging, but you can see it when your car is on a lift. I restore even the unseen paint daubs (following body drop) because it makes me feel as though I did my best to make it the way it looked when it was first built. It also gives you a better feeling that you really know your car.

                      Good luck!
