    Nut, Bolt, and Screw Question

Is there a definitive source for information on size, type, and finish, for nuts, bolts, and screws?

My 73 was partially disassembled when I bought it. I was given a coffee can with a lot of the original fasteners. Unfortunately, I don't know what goes where. I have a 1953-82 parts manual with part numbers. Sometimes I can find information in it on machine bolts like a 3/8-16 x 2. The interior screws seem like they will be a major pain to figure out. Some are chrome while others are black.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Robert, I think the best thing you can do is make it to a few local chapter meets and bring a camera w/you take some pic. of cars I think 70-73 cars should be pretty close to the same. other than the front bumper. there are some many different fastners and finishes the beat thing is to see a few cars.

The TDB will help when you need help and the archives are also a good source for information. a bucket of bolts without seeing them is not going to help much.

There are a few 73 owners on the TDB that really know there stuff.

      Ed,

I've got most all of the fasteners seperated by type, size, and finish. I was hoping there was a publication someone knew of, that would provide the information I was looking for, based on the Corvette part number. I was also hoping someone had purchased an interior screw kit that included some sort of a diagram indicating which screws went where.

Probably best thing to do is to buy one of the interior screw kits available. They come neatly bagged and labelled. You could use that as a guide for your originals. I'm PM'ing you a source for them.

you can buy the exact interior screws from a hardware store like ace, they all get them from same place, I did that and they were perfect match for the ones I had to replace and the cost was way, way, way cheaper. This was several years ago however, worth checking out.

There is no commonly available reference which will provide the information you seek. An older edition of the GM Standard Parts Catalog is about the best you could do and it will provide information on 10% of the fasteners, at best

My 73 was partially disassembled when I bought it. I was given a coffee can with a lot of the original fasteners. Unfortunately, I don't know what goes where. The interior screws WILL BE a major pain to figure out.

I think you're right about buying a kit. It will save me a lot of time.

What color is your interior? If you have black interior there should be black screws that attach the dash panels at the top, three each side, to the top dash. The guage panel screws are chrome and have a "special length", you do not want to install a guage panel screw that will be to long and puncture all the way through the dash panels.
Can you give a discription on what was disassembled on your 73? Anyone that has replaced/repaired heater cores, radios, guages, carpeting, and speedometers/tachs will have screw location experience.

                  Rob,

Paragon http://www.corvette-paragon.com/ has a bolt head chart that might be of some help to you for your C-3.

                    Terry,

I did a cursory search at Paragon for the chart, but couldn't locate it. Do you have a direct link?

                    Thanks,

                      Hey Rob
I feel your pain. When I bought my 74 it was in the exact same condition. All apart and stuffed in generally unmarked cans and boxes and I got a gm assembly manual and it was really helpful. Not the aim manual. Its really makes it difficult to put back together even if you purchase the manuals and reference pages. The paragon chart was very helpful The challenge does delay the project and the tough part is you do not want to replace the original bolts with expensive replacements if you don't have to. I paid 13 bucks for 1 bolt only to later findout that I had the bolt at home which was actually in better condition.
Keep the faith and good luck!

I looked on their website too and did not find it. I'm not sure how they classify this chart. You may need to call them. 1-800-882-4688

I have good luck finding exact oem fasteners at:

Their fasteners are exactly like the OEM in finish, thread, length, and head markings.
