70 Jack Tray number

I've been working on the fiberboard trays and found this number on the bottom of the jack compartment tray: 3041770. The car is a 1970 and I found a pic in a forum search that had the last four digits for a 71 as "1971". I'm pretty sure this one wasn't made in 1770 (though still looking for the George Washington signature) so, is this a part number or a date code?

The rims were pretty ragged and I saw in older posts that glue was used to pull it together. Mine seemed a little more choppy so I took a small coffee grinder, threw some cardboard in it and turned it into mulch then added glue to that and repaired the edges, flipping it upside down when damp and added some weight to keep the lip form. Tomorrow I'll use the little drum sander on a Dremel to smooth it before flocking. Here's a few pictures.

Then, the little woman came home, saw the contraption on her kitchen counter and the mess on my desk...I should have my hearing back in a week or two

And did the coffee grinder use cause any grief? You, sir, are very brave.

How about this one:

I bought it 8/8/75. The box it is in is dated 1/24/74, and of course it is an over-the-counter replacement. You can guess the date as well as I can: 06/10/74.

I thought I had a picture of the bottom of the original from my 1970, but I don't. My best recollection is that there is NO date on the bottom of that one, but now I'll have to go check.

Wayne, it's my understanding that it is a date code, and that the first number represents a shift, or control number of some sort, and that the remaining numbers are month, day, year (only 2 digits). So I think the date would be April 17, 1970.

Thanks folks, another number that falls in line. Oh, and lucky for me she drinks tea and didn't notice the coffee grinder before I had a chance to clean it up
Terry, that center compartment doesn't have a number, probably because it's all black. I'll post some pics after I reflock them. I did the rear window tray and it came out great.

Wayne. I agree with Reba's assessment of date code deciphering. Most I've seen (but not all) are a more abbreviated code, which do not use the zeros in the month/day and only use the last digit of the year. For example, mine is dated (I think) 621712. This would be June 21, 1971, 2nd shift. My car is under the cover and up on the lift but I can/will pull it down and look if it helps you.

As for the tray's restoration, I have restored mine and it came out GREAT! I wrote a tech article on the project and it appeared in either the spring or summer 2009 Restorer. PM me if you don't have the magazine still. I think I have the text from my submission, but not sure about the photos, as I have replaced my computer and think I lost them in the process. I used epoxy, not carpenter's glue to tighten up the edges. I worry that the carpenters glue will not hold up. I also would be concerned with using a power tool on the tray.
