Re: Installation of half shafts ?

My C3 body is off of the frame. Is there a difference in which this is done between the 63 and 70?

Nonetheless, section 4 page 32 of my manual does not mention removal of the spring or strut rod. Am I looking in the wrong section?

How should I install these with the body removed?

On a C3 or C2 the spring and strut rod will prevent the trailing arm from being pushed outboard enough so the half shaft can be mounted to the spindle flange. Refer to Part I of this mult-part video on the subject:

Part 2 of this video series will show you how the trailing arm is moved outboard to drop the half shaft:

IIRC the service manual procedure to remove the half shafts is to mark the inside camber bolt position, then loosen the nut and turn the cam bolt to push the strut rod as far outboard as possible. Then you should be able to remove the half shaft and do the reverse for installation. Once the half shaft is installed move the cam bolt back to the angle position you marked and torque the nut to spec.

I appreciate the help, Frank and Duke.

I would still love to know what manuals you're referencing since my 1970 service manual has apparently omitted everything you're describing.

            63 Shop Manual.

The procedure to disconnect the half shafts to remove the trailing arms states you'll have to push the trailing arm outboard to drop the half-shaft; I don't know how you do that with the rigid strut rod and spring still connected.

If there is another way to do it I'm all ears.

I've done this dozens of times over the years, cannot understand the hang up.
Never paid much attention to any unusual problems (such as disconnecting) with spring or torque arm left install. As mentioned "Slide an angled section of wood between the frame pocket and torque control arm (where the shims are) Thus raising the wheels closer to "on ground" position"
And as Duke mentioned, push strut rod to outer most position. (had forgot that)

I was doing a total rear suspension refurb on the 63 so I went "whole hog" and removed everything...
The good news is I'll prob never have to deal with the issue again..
