Wow! I just sold one of those last year, and got less than $100. That is a pretty hard to find gas cap, but I just don't see $600.

Glad I got mine, in perfect condition, for a buy-it-now price of $50 on Ebay a couple years ago.

It also looks like the $610 cap may have been replated (looks a little too shiny to me), and may have an incorrect paper or cork gasket. My gasket is black rubber, which I think the JG calls for, and I lost no points for it up to and including a National.

I picked mine up for $35 plus shipping, a few months ago. It needs a little restoration work, but it's in pretty good shape as is. Anybody know anyone who restores gas caps?

          Thanks.

I've restored many of these early gas caps. It's not a particularly difficult job. Anyone that does zinc plating can do it for you. Check the archives and you can find specific recommendations for zinc platers.

I would be willing to possibly let mine go for $550.......

It has been incorrectly restored with a paper gasket. The original 1970 gasket was black neoprene rubber. I believe that 1968 was the last year for the paper gasket.

Thanks for the confirmation, Joe. I've had some people tell me that 70 caps should have a paper gasket, despite what the JG says. I never believed them based on several apparently untouched originals I've seen that all had the black rubber gasket.

                    Donald,

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll root around the archives for the info.

My original 1970's gas cap has the black rubber type seal. Still seals the tank releasing lots of pressure when removing. My FEB built 68's original gas cap does not have a paper seal.

Yes, I believe the change from the paper to rubber seal occurred very early in the 1968 model year with the change from the GM #3843576 cap to the GM #3921689 cap.

I would say you did very well. NOS 63-69 vented caps which are much more common typically sell for more than that.
