Is there a difference in the carb studs? In Dobbins books he shows two different studs for his 67 (pages 164 & 165 in the 63-67 book). It looks like 435 and 400 hsp cars have different studs (doesn't make sense). On page 64 of his 68-72 book it shows the stud that I have on my 68 400hsp. I do not use his book as a bible or any other. Can someone comment on this one?

Re: 67, 68 Tripower Air Cleaner Studs
Jack,
Intersting discovery, wouldn't AIM part num be different? perhaps someone can post part numbers for 67 & 68 carb stud?
Is it possible to post pic of the types? My early March 68 400 seems to have original carb stud- I am curious to learn what type is on my car.- Top

Jack
Attached is a photo of the stud on my 68 435HP car. I don't know if it is original but most of the car is.
The 68 AIM shows a part number change for the stud during the model year. It changed from 3869954 to 3928912.
The AIM shows the 3869954 was used in 1967 and the 3928912 continued through 1969 production.

Re: 67, 68 Tripower Air Cleaner Studs
Thread began by referencing an eBay auction. That carb stud appeared to be black oxide finished vs. what I'm used to seeing (cad/zinc).
The stud offered in picture format was described as being 2.5" in end-to-end length. For grins, I looked at two tri-power cars in our shop ('67 and '69). Both had studs that were 2.0" in end-to-end length.
For what it's worth, I installed a 2.5" stud that corresponded to the posted picture and it protruded WELL above the recess in the dome of the tri-power air cleaner...
On earlier issues raised in this thread, my copy of MF Dobbins, 63-67 Fact Book has no tripower stud comparison on the pages indicated. Those pages fall in the '66 Corvette section. My book is 9th Edition, 10/89.
The '67 AIM calls out ONE stud, GM 3869954, for BOTH L68 and L71 engines.- Top

Re: 67, 68 Tripower Air Cleaner Studs
Interesting, your stud measures the length I'm used to seeing. What's different is it lacks a ringed 'skirt' that was shown in the first, 2.5", stud shown as well as the eBay part. Perhaps that 'ring/skirt' is part of the 3869954 vs. 3928912 construction difference...- Top

Re: 67, 68 Tripower Air Cleaner Studs
John, Jack,
John's stud is the same as mine which I believe is original. It really pays (didn't have to pay) to seek out members information and clarification.
Jack, my Dobbins 68 to 72 is the third addtion and the 63 to 67 is so worn out that the covers gone but it does state inside that "its been four years since the First book was released"Jack Corso

John, Patrick, mine is the same as yours. I guess we might have just helped write a new passage when the TIM&JG is revised. I almost bit on the ebay carb stud. I'm glad someone else had the deep pockets.Jack Corso

Re: 67, 68 Tripower Air Cleaner Studs
I'm just glad I actually have a correct part. Everytime I look into these type of issues I end up on the wrong end and have to buy more parts!
John, I was going to inquire about the markings on yours as well- it looks like the screw was lathed and I figured the marks were visegrips. Wonder why they are there? Do you have the same marks Jack?- Top

Guy's, just a photo of SN# 9643 to compare. Same marks as well, perhaps they were put there as traction to tighten it down initially.Attached FilesLast edited by Jack C.; February 17, 2010, 06:09 PM.Jack Corso

Re: 67, 68 Tripower Air Cleaner Studs
I just checked the 68 435 I have I am trying to find history on here on a different post. The stud on this car does not have any of those "hash" marks, I would be inclined to believe that the marks shown on the studs in this thread are from pliers of some sort used to tighten them down. Look close at them, each has a different pattern. Just my thoughts. Interesting thread though, when I first saw that stud I thought it may not be original, this is from a July built car. I am used to looking at the 67's. I like this design better, it limits the amount you can tighten down the wing nut, preventing any warping of the lid or pulling the threads out of the carb do to overtightening. It also allows you to "seat" the wing nut, then it will not back off either.
