    Painting exhaust correctly

I see the judging manual states that the mufflers and pipes were painted black on the 61's. To do this correctly, do I spray the whole system from engine to end of tailpipe? Doesn't seem like the right thing to do.
    Thanks,

John Hinckley has commented on this and supplied pictures. Check the archives...

Exhaust components were assembled to the rolling chassis before it went to the final assy line to receive the engine and body. John said exhaust/muffler painting was part of the black out process on the chassis line and done by spray vs. hand ('mitted' finish). Such would entail typical variance due to human factors and good ole UAW labor + attention to detail!

The final chassis blackout was done after the engine and transmission were installed. The chassis was complete, ready for body drop. That's why the drive shaft also received a complete coating of blackout. It also explains why chassis black is often found on engine components, especially on the sides and bottom of the oil pan.
