    Muffler extension pipe connection

How is the fwd ext pipe and muffler connection judged, as the origional join was welded and the service replacement parts required clamping the pipe to the muffler? The JM addresses the correctness of the muffler "W" marking on the OEM muffler which is welded to the pipe but then goes on to also describes the correctness of the markings on the service muffler, which had to be clamped not welded to the pipe. In the next to last sentence about the muffler it states that "muflers other than service should recieve duductions". The implication here is - no deduct for the GM replacement even though its not welded as origional. Slould you weld them together for origionality points and risk messing it up? Any thoughts?

i believe you'll take a deduction for intermediate pipe clamped to the muffler.mike

Dale The extra clamp would not be judged but the connection of the muffler to the pipe would be a configuration problem that would cause a 25% deduction for the pipes. The reason for the 25% and not the normal 20% is the pipes have no date. Just remember when you look at an item the 5 points that judges look at.

      1. Finish
      2. Installation
      3. Completeness
      4. Configuration
      5. Date

Each item is worth 20% of the allocated points if no date on the item then 25%. The mufflers if I remember correctly are a separate line item and would be judged on there own. Paul 18046

At the Novi Regional I received a 4 point (50%) deduction for originality for mufflers "Not welded, no W". In fact Paul O. was the judge.

That reference to service parts is a carry over from many moons ago when we judged service replacement parts more leniently than reproduction parts. Few here have been around long enough to remember those days, and now days it doesn't matter whether the part is a service replacement or a reproduction. The part is judged on the difference between it and the original.

It is generally not worth your time to over analyze the language in the TIM&JG. Remember and use the KISS principle.

            Dale,

Jeff Aiello and Grant Wong could help you with the '68 muffler. You can send them an email by finding them on the members list.

Here is a website of a company that is trying to make the best reproduction of the '68 configuration from what I have heard. Both Jeff and Grant helped in the production. http://www.gardnerexhaust.com/1968-corvette-exhaust-system.html

I purchased my exhaust system from Allen's Stainless in Logansport, Indiana and the muffler is welded. It does not have the W on the muffler. This was before the Gardner Exhaust came out.

            Good luck,
