Just curious if anyone has ever attempted to put grease fittings on the cross over shaft for the clutch linkage. I realize it would not be authentic but if hidden on the back side of the shaft, would it be a way to keep the part greased and keep it from wearing out as quickly? Just a thought I had while collecting the parts for the clutch linkage replacement.

Re: Grease for the cross over shaft
i simply pack both ends of the clutch bellcrank(cross shaft) with Never-sieze. i don't expectthel'll need re-lubricated in my lifetime. my old 57 was restored in the late 80's, has over 20K miles on it, and there are no indications its starving for lube. good luck with your 62, mike- Top

Re: Grease for the cross over shaft
Despite whatever the JGs say, my SWC had a zerk fitting installed at St. Louis. The use of the plug began with 1964 production.
The cross shaft is hollow, so it holds a lot of grease, and I religiously greased it (along with all the other grease points) at least every 3000 miles until I saw grease run out one of the ends, and it was always the engine ball stud end.
If I had never greased it from new, I doubt if there would have ever been a problem being as how there is at least a couple of ounces of grease in the hollow shaft.

Re: Grease for the cross over shaft
Did the clutch linkage on my 59 this summer and had a zerk fitting installed on the cross shaft. Replaced the ball studs on both ends. The ball stud that was on the fender side of the cross shaft had worn so badly, that there wasn't any "ball"" left on the firewall side of the stud. Of course it had 50 years of shifting on it, so I guess I really can't complain too loudly- Top
