    Correct Axle U-joint Flange

I am in the process of restoring the axle shafts on my 65 396 Coupe. The flange on the right in the photo below came off what I believe to be a replacement shaft. The flange on the left I believe is orginal to the car. Question is am I correct in my assumption and if so are flanges like the one on the left available or do I start looking for a used flange?

    Thank you for the help.

    Dale,

you are correct the one on the left is original for your 65. they do make flanges with out the recess for the u-joint BUT depending on how pickey you are getting the new ones will have different markings.

It's hard for me to see the detail in the photos, including the embossments on the flanges. However, the flange on the left appears to be a GM #3843018. If so, this is the original flange used for 1964-74 Corvettes.

The flange on the right appears to be a GM #360913. This flange was/is a Spicer-manufactured piece and was/is also available through Spicer parts channels as well as under the GM part number through GM dealers. It is now GM-discontinued but may still be available through Spicer. Regardless of the source, these flanges are usually embossed "Spicer", but I can't see it well enough in the photo to confirm that.

The 360913 was used in PRODUCTION for 1975-82 Corvettes and also became SERVICE for all 63-74 Corvettes after about 1976.

        Rich/Joe,

Thanks. Guess I will start looking for a used #3843018.
