      Steve,
Those Halibrands with spindles and rear axles were sold at one of the last McDorman auctions.
I inspected them and just had to have them.
I set my limit on a big number (for me) and never got to place a bid. Jack Podell won them and has been trying to sell them ever since.
      He paid around $27,000.00

Did you hear the story about how Mr Carr acquired the Ferrari and the condition it was in?

I'm guessing that Mr. Carr traded the SR-1 in to Doane Chevrolet for the Ferrari? The Ferrari was in like new condition. It was a 1958 red Spyder.

Dick Doane was very involved in the early Corvette racing scene and I believe Mr. Carr bought the SR-1 from Doane.

I'm assuming that Doane sold the Ferrari because I remember seeing the car having the brakes serviced in Doane Chevrolet's service area. My assumption is that Doane wouldn't have serviced the Ferrari if he hadn't sold it, but the sports car community was very small and tight back then, and maybe he was doing a favor for another sports car nut....

Mr Carr purchased the Ferrari I believe from FORD directly. It was all apart and non running. He told me they had bought it, dissected it and then incorporated some of the engineering into "their" cars.

Secondly Mr Carr sold the SR to Mr Ronald Robert Buck; I have photos of the car the day it was purchased) in 1960 or 1961 I'd have to check my records on the exact date. Mr Buck's dad sold he car to another Chevrolet dealer n 61 or 62 when he was drafted into the United States Army (he was to report July4th, but was given that day off and reported on July 05). I have a check book ledger of how much the car sold for and what dealership purchased it.

Thirdly, I cannot believe the wheel was cracked and pinned, however I do believe there were threaded screws/studs in them and they had wheel weights screwed on the studs. Perhaps this is what was viewed?

Frank Carr..was having his 54 Corvette serviced at Doane Chevrolet when Dick Doane said..Frank..take a look at what just came in. Four of the six 1956 SR1's.

Frank bought the white one. ( per my conversation with Frank Carr ). I believe Frank has pased on.

I wonder if Mr Carr faced the same pricing problem that the Storm (Spring?) Lake Iowa dealer did - had to call MI and ask what the price was. In today's parlance, that would absolutely DEFINE a dealer that was "connected".

As the Copper and the White cars are out there - do we know what the colors of the other two Doane cars were and where the 5th and 6th were shipped?

                          Hey Joel,

I once knew the other two Doane SR1 colors as told to me by Frank Carr. One was black and I can't remember the 4th. Red, I think. Not sure where the other two were shipped. I have posted picture before of the black one when it was in Florida setting a drag strip record.

From memory that sounds correct. As I recall the car was taken to a Florida drag strip and beat Don Garlits. There is a picture of the SR1 with a sign claiming a speed record. I talked to Garlits to confirm but he didn't remember it.

                              Merry Christmas,

Per Dwayne Grotewold there were four SR-1's that he saw at Doane's. Blue, red, white and copper. Wonder if Doane received all six of the cars or where did they go. The car magazines of the era mentioned the availability of the cars (courtesy of Walt Mckenzie). Dwayne wanted the red car but settled for the copper car. Do any of the members remember seeing any of these cars?
